Assassin’s Creed Mirage will feature a smaller map size for Baghdad

Ubisoft is going over and beyond to deliver on its promise of developing future Assassin’s Creed titles while keeping the design of the previous stealth-based AC titles in mind.

They draw inspiration from famous titles like AC: Revelations and AC: Unity. They are also doing away with the RPG-esque gameplay in the epic titles of Origin, Odyssey and Valhalla.

As revealed by Easy Allies on Youtube, Ubisoft’s game developers, at the Summer Game Fest, explained that the upcoming Assassin’s Creed: Mirage’s map size will be comparable to AC: Revelation’s Constantinople and AC: Unity’s Paris map. This hints at a smaller map size.

This doesn’t clear things about the exact size of Mirage’s map. This is because AC: Revelations had a map size of 0.94 sq km while AC: Unity’s Paris was almost double the size at 2.40 sq km.

However, it’s been made quite clear that players have a smaller but more well-designed area to assassinate and operate in stealth. This move is because many fans of the franchise complained of fatigue after the mammoth sizes of Odyssey at 130 sq km and Valhalla at 94 sq km.

In a video by Ubisoft’s official channel titled “Return to the Roots,” the game directors and developers revealed how they had developed the game to focus on and reward stealth.

New elements like the pole-vaulting feature have been added to focus on “verticality,” as mentioned by Senior Game Designer Marco Maresca. The game will feature parkour with momentum and flow similar to the Ezio Trilogy.

With new elements and a smaller room for manoeuvre, players must plan their movements and incorporate stealth. Developers are not going to reward mindless key-bashing.

The size of the map as well as the design of the city, will determine how Basim, under his new mentor Roshan, will develop into a master assassin in 9th Century Baghdad.

While the game is a good four months away from release, having been delayed already, fans expect that Ubisoft will stick to the release timeline. If all goes well, we’ll explore the streets of Baghdad on October 12th, 2023, when Assassin’s Creed: Mirage releases.
