The book is currently available for pre-order and will be out to purchase on the 24^th of June, 2021. The Friday Foster collection spans 214 comic strips, each one with a daily conclusion. The comic ran from 1970 to 1974 and was brought to the public by the Chicago Tribune and the New York News Syndicate. Intriguingly, in an age where the convenience of email and digital communication didn’t exist, the illustrator Jorge Longarón was living in Spain while writer Jim Lawrence was in New Jersey, USA.

They communicated via letters sending each other drafts and artwork that took weeks if not longer, to get to the recipient. This long drawn-out process did pay off, with the comic coming to prominence as one of the first to feature an African-American female protagonist.

The plot loosely revolved around the title character – Friday Foster – working her way to move up the ladder as a photographer. She ends up in front of the camera as a model and regales audiences with her travels, her romantic escapades, and tribulations in her own family.

The cultural significance of Friday Foster makes this new hardcover release a must-read. When grappling with racial tensions in the supposed modern era we live in, dialing back a few decades to examine and appreciate the beginnings of racial acceptance may not be a bad idea.

Friday Foster is one of the snazziest, slickest, and most entertaining ways to put not just art and its cultural influences in the limelight, but also, the world we live in today.
