A Thousand and One Movie Ending Explained: A Twist No One Saw Coming  – What Happened in the end?

A Thousand and One is a heartfelt drama film about the relationship between a boy and his mother as they struggle to make ends meet.

For AV Rockwell’s directorial debut, it’s an excellent piece of work that perfectly captures the essence of life in New York City in the 90’s, especially for people of color.

Teyana Taylor plays the main character, Inez, who kidnaps her six-year-old son, Terry, from the foster care system after she realizes how horribly he will be treated if he stays there any longer.

1. Inez and Terry’s Ending

A Thousand and One ends with Terry finding out that Inez isn’t actually his biological mother. In reality, Inez had kidnapped a child that was never her own and spent most of her life making sure he never found out.

2. Does Lucky beat cancer?

Inez, Lucky and Terry have their fair share of problems throughout the movie but it’s only towards the end that their world really starts falling apart.

Lucky is diagnosed with cancer but due to the family’s situation, they are unable to afford his treatment. This unfortunately leads to Lucky’s death as he is unable to beat the cancer.

This further adds to Inez and Teddy’s distressful financial situation and causes both of them so much pain that it gets to a point where Terry even blames Inez for taking away his only father figure.

Something else we find out about Lucky is that he cheated on Inez some time ago, which resulted in him having a child with another woman in the same neighborhood. Although Inez becomes aware of this early on, she chooses to ignore it for the sake of their family.

3. How does Terry find out the truth?

Terry approaches his guidance counsellor, Ms. Tucker, to ask his help for applying for a job. He wants to start earning so that he can help Inez keep their apartment that their landlord is trying to force them out of.

When Ms. Tucker asks for Terry’s social security number, he gives her the documents that Inez had forged for him when she kidnapped him from foster care. However, Ms. Tucker finds out that the number doesn’t exist, and it doesn’t take too long before Terry reveals the truth about the documents.

Ms. Tucker, who used to work with social services, makes a call to friend who can give her more information about Terry. She then arrives the next day at Inez’s apartment with a social care worker and two officers to meet with her and Terry.

Inez flees, without telling Terry, once she finds out that Ms. Tucker wants to meet her. As a result, Terry is forced to talk to Ms. Tucker and the social care worker on his own.

Ms. Tucker tells Terry that Inez is not his biological mother. She had actually kidnapped him first when he was two years old and again later when he was six and has since then been feeding him lies about his childhood.

The news leaves Terry completely heartbroken. His state is made even worse when the social care worker tells him that they will need to put him back in foster care, until he turns eighteen.

4. Why did Inez kidnap Terry?

After Kim, Inez’s close friend, offers to let Terry stay with her while social services sort out his situation, Terry goes back to the apartment to take all his things. Unexpectedly, he runs into Inez who is also there to do the same thing.

Inez tells Terry that she’s going to run away in order to avoid being taken to prison and that Terry would be much better off without her in his life. But when Terry angrily asks her to tell him the truth, she finally does.

Inez reveals that she didn’t actually kidnap Terry the first time, when he was two years old. She took Terry home with her because he had been abandoned by his birth mother and she didn’t want to see another child go through what she went when she was in foster care.

As for the second time, when Terry was six, Inez kidnapped him because she knew she could give him a better life and possibly change hers too in the process. She believed that if she stayed committed to caring for Terry, it would put her on a better path as well.

Unfortunately for Inez the plan doesn’t work out too well because she ends up being miserable anyway. She feels like no one cares for her, not even Terry.

Inez finally says that despite all her issues and her battle with the justice system, she’ll always know that she’s won because she raised an accomplished and bright boy like Terry.

It’s a bittersweet ending for the two because after all the time they spend together and the ways in which they helped each other grow, them being forced to part way hurts.

5. What is the meaning behind the title?

A Thousand and One is the number on Inez and Terry’s apartment door. The title signifies their home and safe space that protected them from the outside world for as long as it could.

As the apartment starts falling apart and Inez gets closer and closer to losing it, we see Inez and Terry’s lives deteriorating slowly as well.

Finally, when they both lose their home, they also lose each other.  However, it seems like this was for the best because Terry can now legally apply to colleges and Inez can avoid being incarcerated again.

The title perfectly suits the film. And although the ending is sad, you can’t help but agree that it’s what both Inez and Terry needed to move on to the next stage in their respective lives.
