What Timeline Is ‘A Quiet Place Part II’ Set In?

John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place is set in a shockingly quick timeline where the characters are hunted by deadly monsters who rely on sound. The first movie introduced the Abbott family, who have been living a year into the start of the frightful occurrence.

Now, with the release of A Quiet Place Part II, the timeline has been further expanded, providing fans with more insight into what went down. The movie’s opening sequence goes back to when the aliens invaded, explaining Lee’s brief cameo.

It shows the Abbotts’ life, pre-invasion, in a tight-knit community until the monsters descend during Marcus’ baseball game, which the whole town is attending.

While escaping, the family split apart, and Regan goes with her father, which seems odd, considering that the last time audiences saw them, the relationship between father and daughter was tense.

But Part II’s opening sequence certifies that both of them were close before the tragic death of Beau, which makes Lee’s sacrifice all the more devastating to the family, especially Regan.

The death of the family’s youngest child takes place early during the invasion’s timeline and a year before the first movie’s events. When Beau turns on a toy rocket ship given to him by his older sister, it attracts the attention of a monster lurking nearby.

Before Lee can get to his son, the alien reaches Beau first and kills him. Later, the Abbotts build a memorial site to honor his memory, marking 2020 as the year of death.

This is the only indicator of when the movie is actually taking place. The rest of the movie jumps ahead in time and places the Abbotts a year later in 2021, where the movie’s actual events are based.

A Quiet Place ended with the surviving family members discovering a way to kill the aliens, luring one of them into their basement. This became a significant turn in the story’s narrative despite the movie initially being planned as a standalone feature.

The sequel was announced following the massive success of the first installment and was speculated to show the Abbotts in their final war against the aliens. After the opening sequence, A Quiet Place Part II begins in the present day and picks up a few minutes after the first movie’s ending.

In their search for other survivors, Evelyn, Regan, and Marcus come across Emmett (Cillian Murphy), a former acquaintance of Lee, who takes them in. The rest of the film’s events occur over the next few days and follow the Abbott family’s continued fight for survival.

A third installment has been teased by Emily Blunt, but an official announcement is yet to come. A Quiet Place Part II is now showing in theatres and will be available for streaming on Paramount+ on July 12.
