A New PS5 Model is Now Out in Australia, Half a Kg Lighter than Before

PlayStation 5 has been out for almost 2 years now. Released in late 2020, the current-gen console hasn’t seen many changes since the launch, except for a weight reduction that happened in 2021 when Sony rolled out some lighter PS5 models.

At the time, Sony had made some changes in the console’s heat sink that resulted in weight loss. However, the current situation on consoles and GPUs has made things difficult.

Both Xbox and PlayStation consoles have mostly been out of stock due to the hardware shortage since 2020 and seems like Sony is taking steps to counter it.

A newer, lighter model of the PlayStation 5 is now up for sale in Australia. The Disk PS5 now weighs 3.9 kgs, 600 grams lighter than at launch, while the diskless/digital model weighs 3.4 kg, 500 grams lighter than at launch.

Compared to the current models, the weight has been reduced by 500 grams for the disk(CFI-1202A) model and 200 grams for the digital one(CFI-1202B). This means that the disk version now weighs the same as the digital version at launch.

The exact reason for this weight reduction is unknown as Sony is yet to make an official announcement. Some are speculating it to be the result of the upcoming PS5 Pro, giving users some weight gap between the Pro and non-Pro model.

However, the more likely reason is due to the shortages. Prices for PS5 have been raised recently around the world, including Australia, and Sony might be using lighter parts to decrease production costs and saving money to negate the console’s price hike.

It’s yet unclear which parts have been replaced, but we wouldn’t expect Sony to compromise on the PlayStation experience. Hence, with a minor weight reduction, there shouldn’t be any changes in Performance, or in fact even sales.
