1883 Season 1 Episode 8 Speculation
The storm causes heavy damage to the group’s wagons and possessions. Cookie returns to the group only to give them more bad news – he saw a group of men trying to take over what’s left of the herd. The number of men turned out to be far more than what Cookie had initially reported and the situation could’ve taken a turn for the worst if Sam and Two Feathers hadn’t swooped in.

1883 Episode 7 Recap
The group is now crossing the Great Plains and entering the Comanche territory. Wade and Colton tell the group that the Comanche tribe charges a tax for letting cattle graze on their territory. Shea and Thomas accept the tax charges to maintain peace and even invite the two Comanche men they met to dine with them.
One of the Comanche men named Sam and Elsa are immediately intrigued with one another. Sam challenges Elsa to a horse race after they strike up a conversation about Elsa’s horse, Lightning. Lightning and Elsa emerge victorious and Sam dubs her “Lightning Yellow Hair.” The two bond over their lost loves and feel a deeper connection to one another.
Before leaving, Sam warns the group of the storm that is brewing on the horizon and tells them to be wary of bandits. The next morning, the storm hits with ferocity the group wasn’t prepared for. Elsa, Colton and Wade had tried to gather the cattle but they scattered as soon as the tornado hit. Sam comes to their aid and they take shelter in the nook of a hill while the storm passes. Elsa gets swept up in the moment and kisses Sam.
