The group’s run of bad luck continues as Josef and his wife are gravely injured in an unfortunate incident. Shea realizes a grave mistake they unknowingly made when they come across a ransacked Lakota camp full of dead bodies.
They try to rectify their mistake to avoid a misunderstanding with the Lakotas and are able to find the horse thieves responsible for the atrocity.

1883 Episode 10 Speculation
James returns to find out that Elsa had been shot. The Lakota men suggested that he take her to the surgeons in Fort Caspar. Wade is able to remove the arrow and cauterize her wound.
However, Elsa’s path to recovery is looking grim as she’d been shot in the liver, and surviving an infection after that is unlikely.
James puts on a brave front in front of Elsa to reassure her but asks Margaret, who was a nurse during the war to honestly tell him how many liver wounds did she see heal well.
Margaret says Elsa is young and strong but James counters that the arrow was filthy and that they need to start preparing for their daughter’s death.
Margaret is worried about burying her in the middle of the trail and James reassures her that they will stay where they bury her.

1883 Episode 9 Recap
The episode begins with an unfortunate accident as Risa is thrown off her horse when it gets bitten by a rattlesnake.
Josef rushes to his wife’s aid but also gets bitten by the dangerous snake. Colton jumps into action and saves Josef by sucking the venom out of his wound.
To make matters worse, Shea realizes that they left tracks leading up to the ransacked Lakota camp that was full of dead bodies, making it look like they were the ones who committed the atrocities.
When in reality, the camp was looted by the horse thieves. Shea decides that they need to take matters into their hands and put an end to the horse thieves.
He instructs Wade to give the tragic news to the Lakota tribe while James, Thomas, and he go to hunt down the thieves and retrieve the stolen horses.
Meanwhile, Cookie starts panicking at the idea of facing the wrath of the Lakota tribe and insists they move to Fort Caspar. Cookie is later killed by the Lakota men, who indeed assumed the pioneers brutalized their camp.
Elsa gets shot in the torso during the confrontation. She yells out in Comanche and only then is she able to tell the Lakota men the truth about what happened at their village.
