Billy the Kid’s New Love Interest, Dulcinea Del Tobosco

The MGM+ series Billy the Kid, may have finally introduced a steady love interest for its titular character.

Billy the Kid tells the story of the famous outlaw, Willian H. Bonney, better known as Billy the Kid. Tom Blyth plays the titular character and has been widely appreciated for his performance. His work has been compared to the greats, such as Paul Newman and Emilio Estevez’s portrayal of the famed outlaw.

At the end of season 1, the show introduces Dulcinea Del Tobosco, an aristocratic lady from one of the richest families in Lincoln County. In the season 2 premiere, Billy’s brave attempt to persuade her pays off despite their class difference. Nuria Vega plays the character with utmost conviction even though she appears in very few scenes in the episode.

When Billy first sees Dulcinea, he falls in awe of her beauty and charm. He hastily asks her out on a date, and Dulcinea accepts his proposal on the way to her carriage one night. She also hints that Billy can see her again.

Dulcinea also reminds Billy that she is part of a wealthy Mexican gentry family and knows all about the people who arrive and leave the town. This means it will not be easy to persuade Dulcinea as she won’t be swayed by deceit.

Billy is more attracted to Dulcinea after she comes out honestly about her status and who she is. He is also relieved to discover her wild and adventurous side.

Interestingly, there is no mention or record of Dulcinea in Billy the Kid’s real life. Dulcinea Del Tobosco is a fictional character inspired by a character from the 1605 Spanish classic Don Quixote by Cervantes. Widely considered the first modern novel in literature, Don Quixote explores themes of idealism, self-discovery, and the line between reality and fiction.

Dulcinea’s character represents the idea of an ideal woman for the titular protagonist, Don Quixote. She is mentioned in the story as the ideal lover for Don Quixote, who wants a love interest to fit himself into the chivalrous culture of that time. However, she never actually appears in the story.

Dulcinea’s mention in Billy the Kid makes it an interesting reference, as Billy also views Dulcinea as the ideal woman, much like Don Quixote in the novel.

In reality, Billy is rumored to have been with multiple women, though most of them are undocumented or not serious. But considering the amount of screen presence and importance Dulcinea is getting in the series, she seems to be way more than just another love interest for Billy the Kid.

Billy the Kid’s most prominent love interest in real life was Paulita Maxwell, who has not been mentioned or introduced in the series yet. Paulita was one of Billy’s partners in New Mexico and was pregnant with his child.

Dulcinea’s character has a strong resemblance to Paulita Maxwell in terms of their social class. So, if Paulita is not introduced in the show, we can assume Dulcinea is meant to represent her in the series.
