After Logan’s death and Kendall & Roman’s takeover of Waystar Royco, Luke Matsson and the Roy brothers have been in a private bid war over GoJo’s acquisition of the Roy family’s media giant. Kendall Roy brought forward a masterful plan in the latest episode of Succession, and though Matsson tries to sabotage his move, it just backfires on him.
In episode 6, Kendall proposes a new community-based idea that Logan had thought of before his death – Living+. The new business model basically promises senior citizens a chance at immortality. Waystar Royco will provide occupants security, exclusive access to Royco Entertainment, and the cherry on top, life-extending medical treatments and procedures.
Despite what Matsson and Kendall’s haters think, the general public is pleased with his presentation and wants in! But why did Kendall launch Living+ days before the GoJo deal was finalized?
Kendall and Roman have confessed to Shiv & the audience that they are trying to get out of the deal with Matsson. And though Kendall’s Living+ move is certainly too good to be true, the positive response guarantees that Waystar Royco’s stock price will go through the roof, rendering the GoJo CEO unable to take over without raising the stakes.
Matsson knows Kendall’s move will have desired effect and tweets a message that will deter the public from investing in Living+. But his poor choice of words and his joking tone only ended with him digging his own grave.
Photoshopping a promo image of Royco Entertainment’s mascot dog in front of the Auschwitz camp gate, the GoJo CEO posts the following caption: “Doderick macht frei.” The German phrase “Arbeit macht frei,” meaning “work sets you free,” was one of the phrases the Nazis used to justify their concentration camps.
Matsson’s objective was to paint Living+ in a negative light, comparing it to the Nazis’ concentration camps. But instead, all he ended up doing was making an inappropriate joke by referencing one of the German’s greatest follies and the world’s worst nightmare, The Holocaust.
Kendall smoothly plays off his tweet in his interview, but Matsson faces terrible backlash over the ill-phrased tweet. And while this might seem like just a blip, this will have more lasting repercussions on the last deal of Succession.
With only four episodes left in the series’ final season, Matsson just made the wrong move, and Kendall is free to checkmate the GoJo CEO.
