Roland Emmerich (Independence Day, 2012) is back with Moonfall, a film that is sure to make a noise at the box office.
In anticipation of the same, the first five minutes of the movie has been released. Before you watch the clip, here’s a short premise:
A formidable force knocks the moon off its course, sending it hurtling towards Earth. In the face of a hopeless, inevitable destruction, astronauts Jo Fowler (Halle Berry), Brian Harper (Patrick Wilson), and conspiracy theorist KC Houseman (John Bradley) team up to stop the collision.
But they will soon find out that there’s more to the moon than we know about.
The clip starts off quite cheerfully to the tunes of Toto’s Africa as the team debates its lyrics. Harper and Marcus (Frank Fiola) are out on a spacewalk, presumably doing some routine checks/repairs, with Fowler watching over them.
Everything is suddenly thrown into chaos when the astronauts notice a warped black entity colliding with their craft. It breaks off one of the ship’s attachments, severing Marcus’ cables and separating him from the others.
While Harper is able to make it back into the ship and stabilize it, with an unconscious Fowler in the corner, something tells me this is the first and last time we will see Marcus.
The movie will definitely lean heavy into the sci-fi aspect, as it teases an extraterrestrial force or even the possibility of aliens on the moon. It is quite in the style of Emmerich’s other apocalyptic films.
The official trailer released on November 1 already hinted at a fictional exploration of one of the most famous urban conspiracies — that is, the 1969 Apollo landing being fake.
The film takes it a step further to state that the moon itself is fake, and authorities have been keeping its dangers a big secret from us all.
Moonfall is set to release in theatres on February 4, 2022.
