Twitch Increases Subscription Pricing in Australia, Canada, Turkey

Summary

  • Twitch has announced that it will increase the subscription prices.
  • The pricing will increase by one dollar in Canada and Australia and by one pound in the UK.
  • This is to increase streamer revenue, whose split will be increased from 50/50 to 70/30.

Twitch focuses primarily on video game live streaming and has been the home to numerous tournaments for many competitive games like Counterstrike, Global Offensive, Valorant, and League of Legends, to name a few.

Twitch confirmed on February 20th that a Tier 1 subscription will cost AD 8.99 in Australia, CD 7.99 in Canada, and GBP 4.99 in the UK from March 28th. This is a one-unit increment in the respective currencies. This applies to desktop and mobile web browsers. The price increment for the mobile application will be announced in the coming months.

Those thinking that the United States has been exempted from this increment must remember that Twitch’s Chief Monetization Officer has mentioned that the subscription price could increase in the USA. The US and Canadian currencies lie close together in exchange rates.

An unlikely victim of this price increment is Turkey. According to general statistics, Twitch subscriptions are increasing 400% in Turkey.

The general reaction to this price increment is not a warm reception. Players and streamers are asking more clarification about how the price increment translates to streamer revenue.

One primary reason for the price increment is to allow streamers to earn more. Twitch’s updated Partner Plus program will let the Partners and Affiliates split to increase to 70/30 instead of the usual 50/50 split.

Twitch must clarify their reasoning behind the step, with streamers like Adin Ross and Pokimane already leaving for better platforms, otherwise things could go from bad to worse in no time.
