Sony has decided that it can’t take any box office risks and so, has delayed the release of Venom: Let There Be Carnage by three weeks. The new date is set for October 2021.
Over the past few months, movies have taken their chances with a theatrical release. While some numbers weren’t good, there was still hope that it would pick up in the near future. Sadly, the onset of Covid-19’s Delta variant has debilitated any recovery made and filled the weeks to come with uncertainty.
One eye-opening evidence came with the recent Suicide Squad’s result, which despite being a predicted blockbuster, settled for a little above only 25 million USD in its opening weekend.
Unlike Disney and Warner Bros who have been experimenting with the hybrid release (for good or for bad) and providing an online streaming option, Sony is entirely dependent on their theatrical release. This puts Venom 2’s fate in jeopardy.
It would make sense to gauge the results in the weeks to come, but word is that Sony initially pondered on a January 2022 release, instead of the October one. We wouldn’t b-+e surprised that Sony may push the film back once again if scores are not in order by October 21.
If the film is played on the silver screens on its new date, it has big competition to tussle with: Venom 2 will be released on the same date as Halloween Kills and sandwiched between the releases of No Time to Die and Dune.
About Venom: Let There Be Carnage
Venom: Let There Be Carnage is an upcoming American superhero film directed by Andy Serkis. A sequel to 2018’s Venom, it is based on the Marvel Character of the same name. Tom Hardy will be reprising his role as journalist Eddie Brock/ Venom and newcomer Woody Harrelson will play psychotic serial killer Cletus Kasady/ Carnage, in the second installment. Further cast includes Michelle Williams, Reid Scott, and Naomie Harris.
Venom ended with the symbiote destroying Carlton Drake, the symbiote Riot, and the Life Foundation’s spaceship. Thus the world was saved. In a mid-credits scene, Brock was invited to interview incarcerated serial killer Cletus Kasady, who promised “carnage” when he escaped. This was Woody Harrelson’s Carnage reference.
Now, the trailer for Venom: Let There Be Carnage teased the appearance of another symbiote Toxin through his host, Patrick Mulligan.
