The third episode of The Summer Hikaru Died, titled “Denial”, started with Yoshiki visiting “Hikaru” in his house, where he started reminiscing about the past. Anyone could tell that he really missed Hikaru, and the fact that he would never see Hikaru again pained him. As time passed, Yoshiki felt worse about the whole situation and decided to reach out to Kurebayashi for help.

The following day, Yoshiki met up with Kurebayashi, and he learnt a lot. The woman claimed that whatever lived in the mountains had descended, and that it was wreaking havoc in the village. She said she believes that “Hikaru” is the source of this evil, and told Yoshiki that she had a similar experience. Her dead husband came back alive, and since she wanted to spend more time with him, she didn’t question the obvious, and her son paid the price for her carelessness.

Yoshiki, too, accepted that “Hikaru” was dangerous, and he started keeping his distance from “Hikaru”. “Hikaru” caught on to this soon and asked Yoshiki if he was upset with him. Yoshiki agreed to this, and we got to see “Hikaru” lose all sanity. He was apparently insecure that he wasn’t enough to replace Hikaru. He was also jealous that Yoshiki was meeting strangers and confiding in them. These feelings started overflowing, quite literally, because “Hikaru” turned into the monster that he is, and started to envelope Yoshiki.

“Hikaru” quickly snapped, apologised, asked Yoshiki not to hate him, and left. Eventually, Yoshiki realised that Hikaru was really lonely. There were a lot of feelings in the scene, both Yoshiki’s and Hikaru’s, but not all of them were addressed. However, Yoshiki did know that he didn’t want to let “Hikaru” be alone, so he went over to his place, apologised, and made up.

3. Speculation of Episode 4 of The Summer Hikaru Died

Yoshiki and “Hikaru” may not be fighting anymore, but this doesn’t mean that Yoshiki has forgotten everything that Kurebayashi had told him. “Hikaru” was still very likely behind the strange happenings in the village, and Yoshiki is likely going to confront “Hikaru” about this.

“Hikaru” has only ever been transparent with Yoshiki so far, so we can expect him to admit to his crimes. Yoshiki will probably condemn this, but he still can’t abandon Hikaru, so the two will likely reach some kind of truce.
