The first episode of The Summer Hikaru Died went straight into the death of “Hikaru”. We got to see how the boy named Hikaru got lost in the mountains, and the search party sent after him could not find him in the storm. Hikaru descended the mountains the next day with no injuries and no recollection of the previous day.
Months later, as Hikaru and his best friend Yoshiki were hanging out, Yoshiki told Hikaru that he had something to ask him and that it was a doubt he had had for months, ever since Hikaru went missing in the mountains. He asked “Hikaru” if he actually was Hikaru. “Hikaru” then melted into a monstrous form, and with tears in his eyes, asked how Yoshiki knew, even though Hikaru’s form and personality were perfectly copied.
“Hikaru” then begged Yoshiki not to tell anyone because he loved Yoshiki and did not want to have to kill him. Yoshiki knew that he had lost his best friend once and for all, but couldn’t help but keep him around because having the fake Hikaru was better than having no one at all. Time passed as Yoshiki put up with “Hikaru” as he experienced life for the first time. Yoshiki accepted the fact that Hikaru was no more and lived life as usual.
However, this was just on the outside. On the inside, Yoshiki still saw dreams of the real Hikaru and would wake up in tears, only to join “Hikaru” to go to school. Not many would be able to empathize with this terribly morbid situation, but it is clear that Yoshiki is depressed. As Yoshiki and Hikaru were going back home from school, they came across a woman who started screaming at the sight of “Hikaru”, and said, “Lord Nonuki has come down from the mountains”.
The woman was well known to be delusional, so they didn’t pay heed to her, but based on “Hikaru”‘s face, it was clear that she was onto something. The granny didn’t live for long, though. That night, she was visited by someone, and although the person wasn’t revealed, they had Hikaru’s voice. The next day, the granny was discovered dead in her house, which grabbed the attention of an investigator from the city.
3. Speculation of Episode 2 of The Summer Hikaru Died
The end of the first episode has proven that “Hikaru” cannot be fully trusted. However, we still don’t know if Yoshiki is ready to reject “Hikaru” even when he finds out that he has killed a person. Meanwhile, the investigator from that mysterious company seems to be pretty interested in the incident that occurred in Yoshiki’s town.
Yoshiki’s village worships a deity in the mountains known as “Nonuki-sama”. It is said that the Indou family is in charge of all the rituals needed to keep Nonuki-sama in check. The villagers now believe that the Indou family (Hikaru’s family) has messed up after seeing the granny die, but the mysterious detective believes that their village hosts something far more sinister.
