Secret Invasion episode 4, titled Beloved, hints at the possible existence of mutants and X-Men in the MCU by slipping in a piece of information subtly.
The episode centers around the backstory of Nick Fury’s wife, Priscilla, and revealed that she was secretly allied with Gravik and the renegade Skrulls, whose aim was to murder Nick Fury.
The episode also tells us more about Priscilla’s human life and struggles while her husband was away on various missions involving the Avengers, HYDRA, and outer space.
The episode also explains the origin of Priscilla’s identity. She was originally Varra, a Skrull who had taken the place of Dr. Priscilla Davis, a young woman with a terminal heart condition, after her death.
Varra had made a deal with Davis to honor her memory and take care of her parents and also continued Davis’ academic career as an author. A framed book cover in the Furys’ house could indicate a significant connection to the mutants and the X-Men in the MCU.
The book cover can be seen briefly on the wall in the tense scene where Fury and Priscilla shoot each other. The book’s title reads “Decoding the “Superhuman” Gene,” which is a curious choice for a book in the MCU.
Most of the MCU’s prominent heroes do not have a specific gene that gives them powers. For example, Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor are some examples of heroes whose abilities are not genetic. However, there is one group of heroes who share this characteristic.
In the comics, mutants develop powers during adolescence due to the activation of the X-Gene in response to stress or emotion. Marvel Studios has been gradually introducing mutants into the MCU, such as Kamala Khan in Ms. Marvel and Namor in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, but the X-Gene has not been explicitly named.
However, the Superhuman Gene mentioned in Secret Invasion episode 4 could be another name for the X-Gene, implying that mutants and the X-Gene are already known in the MCU, which alters Marvel Studios’ introduction of mutant-kind.
The mention of the X-Gene in the MCU opens the door for mutants and the X-Men to join the franchise. This is more likely if the X-Gene or something of that kind is already familiar to scholars in the MCU. It’s unknown what Priscilla Davis’ field of expertise was before she died, but she may have researched mutations, enabling Varra to continue her work and write her potentially influential book.
This is a thrilling addition to Phase 5’s Secret Invasion and a promising hint for the MCU’s future, but this is not the first time that mutant genes have been referenced in the MCU.
The concept of a Superhuman Gene has been in the MCU for several years but has become more relevant during the MCU’s Multiverse Saga as Marvel Studios has been preparing for the introduction of mutants and the X-Men.
The Wakanda Files, a book written by Shuri containing data on several heroes, indicated that Wanda and Pietro Maximoff’s powers could have been genetic, though they were also amplified by the Mind Stone. This idea was supported in Phase 4’s WandaVision, which suggested that Wanda had some powers as a child, which could mean that both the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are mutants in the MCU.
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law also possibly hinted at both Bruce Banner and his cousin Jennifer Walters being mutants. While teaching his cousin how to be a Hulk, Banner disclosed that they have a genetic trait that enables them to absorb gamma radiation and become Hulks. Possibly, they both have a Superhuman Gene or the X-Gene itself.
It’s confirmed that the MCU’s mutants have the X-Gene, as Kamala Khan was informed that she has a genetic mutation in Ms. Marvel, so it seems that Secret Invasion could have shown that the MCU’s mutants are already widespread and could be appearing to audiences very soon.
