Episode 1 Recap
The episode begins with Shamiko and Momo meeting up during the summer holidays. Shamiko comments on Momo’s outfit, surprised by her cute dress.
It is evident that both of them have different intentions of meeting up since Shamiko is ready for a fight while Momo thinks they’re just going to hang out.
We get a flashback to Shamiko writing a letter to Momo, challenging her to a duel. She tries to write a serious-sounding letter and even takes some help from her homeroom teacher.
After loads of spelling errors and sloppy mistakes, her letter is finally complete. She puts it in a cute envelope and delivers it to Momo, who mistakes it for an invitation to hang out.
Back in the present, Shamiko asks Momo about how they should begin. Momo suggests that they could go to the market and roam around. Confused, Shamiko still follows her around as they play gacha games and have some snacks.
Not understanding why Momo isn’t fighting, Shamiko directly tells her about the nature of her letter. Disappointed that the letter was a challenge to a duel, Momo expresses how she looked forward to having fun.
Seeing Momo sad, Shamiko decides that they should continue having fun and postpone their fight to a later date. The two girls then hang out for the rest of the day, and when their date ends, Shamiko tells Momo to be ready for a duel since she’s going to challenge her regularly from now on.
The next day, Shamiko finds Mikan outside her apartment building. Mikan tells her that she’s looking for “Banda Terrace,” which is where she’s shifting to.
Shamiko points to a run-down apartment and tells her that it is the place she’s looking for. Mikan is taken back by the horrible condition of the building but reluctantly moves in.
Shamiko helps her unpack, and while they’re arranging Mikan’s stuff, Momo walks into the room, announcing that she too is moving into the building.
Momo brings Shamiko’s family some meat as a greeting as the episode ends. They all enjoy a hotpot while getting excited about living next to each other.

The Demon Girl Next Door is a four-panel manga by Izumi Ito. It started serialization in 2014 and has inspired an anime adaptation in 2019 by J.C. Staff.
Yuuko Yoshida is a 15-year-old girl who awakens one morning with demonic power and is tasked with defeating a local magical girl. She has horns and a tail, but truthfully less power than an ordinary girl. She struggles to lift the ‘curse of a 40,000 yen per month living.’
