Episode 6 of The Case Study of Vanitas, part 2, titled “Just the Two of Us,” is the latest installment of the anime.
This was a pretty heavy episode. We found out why Astolfo hates every vampire indiscriminately and why he wants to kill Noe even though he hasn’t harmed anyone.
Astolfo used to be kind-hearted and gentle but was betrayed by a vampire who he thought of as a friend. The vampire killed his entire family, which fuelled his anger towards all vampires.
Also, Vanitas used the altering engine and reversed Chloe’s spell. All that he needs to do is use his book and remove Chloe’s spell. Will Vanitas restore the castle to its original form as everything around him crumbles? Keep watching to find out.
Episode 7 Speculation
The next episode will mark the end of the beast of Gevaudan. Chloe is back to her normal form, and we’ll see how she reacts to Jean-Jacques’ confession to her. Jeanne and Chloe will also reunite and clear any misunderstandings between them.
Astolfo will still try to kill Noe due to his ongoing rampage, but Roland could step in to stop him. His traumatic rage was pretty upsetting to witness, and I hope he could regain his kindness towards vampires.
Also, we still don’t know why Dante and Johann are in Gevaudan. It’s clear that they’re traders of information, but it’s still unclear who they are working for. Vanitas, Noe, and Jeanne will probably return to Paris with Roland.
Another interesting thing to see will be how Lord Ruthven and his council will react to this catastrophe. The beast is gone, but Chloe is still alive. I hope Jeanne doesn’t get punished for this since she technically completed her mission.

Episode 6 Recap
A disheveled Jeanne sits alone in a dark void, and Vanitas tries to talk her out of killing Chloe. She monotonously repeats that she needs to put an end to the trouble in Gevaudan, as instructed by Lord Ruthven. Vanitas’ voice echoes as he asks her if that’s what she really wants.
She tells him that Chloe is a curse-bearer, and it’s too late to save her. Vanitas appears before her and reassures her that there’s still time. They break out of a dark cloud, and Jeanne tearfully asks Vanitas to save Chloe.
We then cut back to the d’Apchiers’ castle’s partially destroyed library, where Vanitas runs towards Jean-Jacques and tells him that Chloe’s vengeance plan has failed. He tells him that the only way to save him is by using the book of Vanitas and asks him to locate it.
Astolfo also lies among the scatted books and debris. This is when we learn about his past through a flashback.
Astolfo was born into a wealthy family of chasseurs and was taught that vampires were evil creatures who must be killed. A young Astolfo, however, was too kind-hearted to even think about harming anyone.
His mother reminded him that not wanting to opt for violence was also courageous, and he must never forget that. One day, Astolfo and his younger sister become friends with a vampire after finding him hurt in a forest. They start meeting regularly, and Astolfo tells his new friend about his family.
Unbeknownst to him, the chasseurs’ paladin killed the vampire’s family, and he made friends with him to take revenge. One unfortunate day, the vampire enters his home and kills all of his family except him. This event triggers hatred in young Astolfo, and he makes it a mission to kill every single vampire.
Back in the library, Vanitas tells Johann and Dante to look for his book on the second floor of the library while he tries to use the altering machine to reverse Chloe’s spell. The entire castle is engulfed in a closed space and is on the verge of collapsing.
Roland and his fellow chasseurs are fighting against dark wolves and a giant beast outside the castle. As their energy starts diminishing, Roland silently hopes that Vanitas and Noe quickly take control of the situation.
Vanitas’ spell begins to work slowly, and Chloe’s abstract form begins to materialize. Noe tells Jean-Jacques to rush to Chloe and talk things out with her since it was clear that she intended to die after her mission was complete.
Just then, Astolfo wakes up enraged and lethally attacks Jean-Jacques. He resumes his fight with Noe once again as Jean limps towards Chloe.
Chaos ensues both inside and outside the castle, and Jean manages to bring Chloe back to sanity. The episode ends with Dante tossing the book of Vanitas to its owner and the library walls cracking. Vanitas catches the book while flying towards Chloe with the help of Jeanne.
About The Case Study of Vanitas
The Case Study of Vanitas manga is created by Jun Mochizuka. It started serialization in the Monthly Gangan Joker magazine in December 2015. It is receiving an anime adaptation in July 2021.
Noe, a young vampire, is in search of a cursed book called The Book of Vanitas. However, on his flight to Paris, he comes face to face with Vanitas and realizes that he is a self-proclaimed vampire doctor.
Somehow Noe ends up as Vanitas’ partner to heal vampires who are going feral under an evil influence.
