Episode 3 of The Case Study of Vanitas, part 2, titled “The d’Apchiers’ Vampire,” is the latest installment of the anime.
This episode focused on Chloe and her family’s past. After discovering that Chloe willingly turned into a curse-bearer, Noe gets to know about her history. Chloe was once a human child who turned into a vampire when she was 11.
Ever since her transformation, her father spent all his time and money trying to turn her back into a human. The research slowly shifted towards studying the world formula and creating an altering engine as time passed.
Also, it’s clear that Chloe is still a good person but has been manipulated by Naenia to do bad things. Will Jeanne try to understand Chloe’s perspective instead of trying to kill her? Keep watching to find out.
Episode 4 Speculation
In the next episode, Vanitas, Jeanne, Dante, and Johann will finally reach the Gevaudan castle. It’s safe to assume that Vanitas still wants to save Chloe while Jeanne intends to kill her. Even though Jeanne hesitated at first, it seems like she’s hell-bent on slaying her this time.
We found out that Chloe’s history with Ruthven is complicated, and he might have sent Jeanne to kill her because of personal reasons. However, Jeanne doesn’t know the complete story, so maybe Noe will try to show her Chloe’s perspective.
Even though Chloe seems innocent, she’s clearly being manipulated by Naenia, and we still don’t know why she stole Vanitas’ book. I hope that Vanitas somehow saves her and makes her realize that she’s being used by Naenia.
Also, we saw that Chloe had turned on the altering engine. As of now, we don’t know what the engine will actually do, but it looks really dangerous.

Episode 3 Recap
Noe furiously demands Chloe to get away from the dark shadow vampire, Naenia. Chloe ignores his pleas and asks Noe to sit down for breakfast. Noe is terrified and confused as he sees the killer of his childhood friend, Louis, happily seated for food.
He then confronts Chloe and asks her if she is the beast of Gevaudan since, according to a rumor, the beast is a curse-bearing vampire. He further warns her that if she is the beast, the shadow has robbed her of her true name.
Chloe calmly answered that this is what she wanted, and she willingly gave Naenia her name. She became a curse-bearer of her own free will in exchange for a wish.
The dark shadow slithers closer to Noe and explains how it is difficult to capture the true names of powerful vampires like Chloe, and hence, they had to make a deal.
Naenia then offers Noe the same and says that she’ll grant him any wish in exchange for his name. Instead of getting swayed by the offer, Noe questions her if she had proposed the same to Louis, becoming angrier by the second.
He tries grabbing onto her but gets engulfed in black smoke. The two create havoc, and Noe destroys the dining table and its contents. Enraged, Chloe punches Noe and states that she doesn’t like those who waste food.
Noe wakes up to Jean-Jacques, who tends to his wounds and provides him with food. Noe is extremely impressed by him and asks him about Chloe’s past. We then cut to Vanitas, Dante, Johann, and Jeanne walking in the woods searching for Noe and Chloe.
Dante tells Vanitas that Chloe’s family, d’Apchiers’, have been producing an alteration engine, a device for changing the world formula. This is the reason why both humans and vampires are searching for Chloe.
Back at the mansion, we finally find out about Chloe’s past. She used to be a human but turned into a vampire when she was 11 years old. Her father gathered researchers, alchemists, and magicians from all over the world to turn her back into a human.
After her father’s death, the research became more focused on an alteration engine and the world formula. Chloe silently watched her family towing away in research until she was the only d’Apchier left.
She then met Ruthven and became close friends with him. He told her that he wanted to build a society where humans and vampires could live in harmony.
Soon, he introduced her to a young Jeanne, and she gave her the courage to explore the outside world. Things took a turn for the worse when one day Ruthven visited her, injured. He no longer believed in human-vampire harmony and wanted to use Chloe’s research for his own greed.
Chloe cuts off her ties with him and, after losing both Jeanne and Ruthven, she fell into loneliness and despair. This is when Naenia came to her and manipulated her into giving away her name.
As the episode ends, Chloe turns on the alteration engine as Vanitas and the other try to reach her as quickly as possible.

The Case Study of Vanitas manga is created by Jun Mochizuka. It started serialization in the Monthly Gangan Joker magazine in December 2015. It is receiving an anime adaptation in July 2021.
Noe, a young vampire, is in search of a cursed book called The Book of Vanitas. However, on his flight to Paris, he comes face to face with Vanitas and realizes that he is a self-proclaimed vampire doctor.
Somehow Noe ends up as Vanitas’ partner to heal vampires who are going feral under an evil influence.
