2. Recap of Episode 23 of The Apothecary Diaries Season 2
The latest episode of the Apothecary Dairies started with the confrontation between Jinshi and Shishou, during which Shishou used his new model of the feifa. Jinshi found this interaction to be weird, as Shishou seemed to be acting. In the end, Shishou accepted his defeat, dropped his weapon, got stabbed by Jinshi’s army, and died. Much of this didn’t have an explanation, but Jinshi still had to catch Loulan and Shenmei, so he didn’t spend much time pondering.
His search for Loulan didn’t go on for long, as Loulan came to him, feifa in hand, and threatened him to follow her into a room. Inside the room were Shenmei and Suirei. Loulan brought Jinshi to the room for a reason, and that was to bring her back to reality. She explained that pure consort Shenmei being wed to Shishou was a favor that the late emperor did for Shishou for marrying his illegitimate daughter.
She also explained that Shenmei wasn’t initially sent to the rear palace as a gift, but in fact, she was a hostage. Shenmei refused to believe this, but Jinshi could believe this, because this made sense to him based on what he had learnt. This was followed by Loulan purposely riling Shenmei up by being offensive to her. This interaction ended when Shenmei snatched the feifa from Loulan and shot her, but in turn got killed by the rebound(Loulan had jammed the opening of the feifa).
Following this, Loulan requested two things from Jinshi: to have the members of the Shi-clan who were exiled to be exempted from any crimes, and the second was permission to scar Jinshi’s face as revenge for her mother. Many events of this episode cannot be understood without context, so we urge you to watch the previous episodes to understand this better.
The final part of the episode featured Loulan happily dancing with a satisfied face after she diligently saw through her responsibilities. In the end, she was shot to death by Jinshi’s subordinates, and we watched as Suirei helplessly grieved her sister’s death with tears in her eyes. Jinshi knew that he could’ve made things end differently by doing his part, but didn’t want to disrespect Loulan’s strong resolve.
3. What To Expect In Episode 24 of The Apothecary Diaries Season 2
Episode 23 of The Apothecary Diaries was by far the saddest episode in the anime. Shisui’s family was killed, and the sole survivor, Suirei, was exempted from execution thanks to Loulan’s plea. As Maomao rested along with all the dead children of the Shi clan, we saw how deeply saddening the effects of this war were. The upcoming episode is the season finale, in which we will see Maomao and Jinshi back in the rear palace.
The whole situation with Maomao getting abducted by Suirei and the whole Shi clan getting annihilated is complicated, and this needs to be sorted out. Maomao will likely receive some form of punishment for leaving the rear palace without permission, unless Jinshi exerts his influence as the Moon Prince. That said, we will likely see Jinshi use his identity as the Moon Prince throughout the next episode.
