2. Recap of Episode 20 of The Apothecary Diaries Season 2
Shenmei was furious about Maomao and Kyou-u being at their secret research quarters. She immediately slapped Suirei and blamed her for not protecting the shack from outsiders. She then ordered her to have Maomao strapped to a pillar to have her whipped, but on hearing this, Maomao knew that Shenmei would want to “accidentally” kill her between the punishment, as she saw the feifa production.
As luck would have it, Loulan stepped in and told Shenmei not to punish Maomao, as she was the replacement for the apothecary who had recently died, and she’d be working on perfecting the medicine for immortality. She even told her that Maomao was over thirty years old but couldn’t age as a consequence of the countless experimentation on her body.
The weirdest thing about this situation was that Loulan actually spoke, and she had Shisui’s voice. Maomao connected the dots and understood that Shisui had perfectly fooled everyone in the palace, including Maomao herself. At this point, a lot of Shisui’s and Loulan’s specific traits in the palace made a lot more sense, but none of this mattered anymore as she saved Maomao’s life.
Maomao was then locked in a cellar with a lot of medicines to work her magic, along with the notes of a very learned apothecary who had mysteriously died (very likely killed under Shenmei’s instructions). She could only leave her cellar once a day to report to Shenmei on her progress with the elixir of immortality. Maomao wasn’t held at gunpoint or anything, though, and she had the freedom to research at her own pace, and not research at all, and Shenmei would be displeased, but would still not harm her, at least as of now.
It is worth mentioning here that Kyou-u’s mother, who was mentioned in the previous episode, is likely a prostitute of sorts and worked under Shenmei’s instructions. Kyou-u is obviously in the dark about this and is under the impression that his mother is working hard for Shenmei. Maomao speculated that his mother might already be dead at this point, which is probably why Kyou-u was kept away from his mother for such a long time.
Meanwhile, in the Rear Palace, Lakan was furious, and he took all his fury out on Jinshi. He already knew that Shishou was planning on waging war against them, and he was disappointed with Jinshi for not taking any action to save Maomao. This is a really interesting situation as Lakan was fully aware of Jinshi’s true identity, and knew that Jinshi didn’t have the guts to exercise his authority, and discard the identity of “Jinshi the Eunuch”. Amid this argument, Luomen dropped by, calmed Lakan down, and asked him to be respectful while asking for a favor.
3. What To Expect In Episode 21 of The Apothecary Diaries Season 2
The latest episode of The Apothecary Diaries Season 2 has made it clear that the Emperor will be going to war against Shishou’s country. After Lakan was done with his tantrum, he bowed down to Jinshi, addressed him as the moon prince, and asked him to wage war against their enemies. Meanwhile, Maomao has also reached the truth about Jinshi’s identity and realised that he clearly wasn’t just any high-ranking official in the palace.
