Stranger Things Season 4 was one of the most-awaited Netflix series this year, and besides Squid Game, it is the biggest franchise the streaming platform has ever created. The marketing campaigns are in full swing, and the show is generating enough noise across all platforms.
However, one of these marketing gimmicks backfired and led to a significant issue. If you’ve been away from social media and the internet in the past week, you’re lucky because major spoilers of Stranger Things Season 4 have been leaked.
What made matters worse was that it was because of the streaming giant, Netflix, and nobody else. Here’s how it happened.
Turns out, Strange Things Season 4 major plot points were leaked recently when cards from the tie-in Monopoly game appeared on the internet. The cards had text that gave away spoilers for the upcoming season and caused the Duffer Brothers to have a meltdown.
While there’s no confirmation of how exactly it all went down, The Hollywood Reporter mentioned how Netflix would’ve given the go-ahead to the Monopoly game’s release by mistake. Considering the campaigns around one of Netflix’s biggest shows are vast, keeping track of each promotional asset would’ve been difficult.
In fact, a Reddit user mentioned how a reputed game company is selling the game, and people are buying the game from it. The user also claims how people have gotten access to the Stranger Things themed game fairly, and technically, there’s no leak whatsoever.
This leak has caused quite a stir on the internet, considering that Season 4 was supposedly their biggest season so far. In fact, we were also going to get answers to some burning questions we’ve been carrying since the beginning of Season 1.
We know that at the end of Season 3, Eleven loses all her powers, and people are keen on seeing what she does next. It turns out that the spoiler for this was also given in the board game, and fans tweeted it, too. There have been other tweets with more spoilers as well.
Amidst all this, numerous publishers have also started promoting and selling Monopoly games whose themes are based on the previous season. Could this be a diversion, or are those actual leaks? I guess we’ll just have to wait and find out.
However, as they say, no publicity is bad publicity. With these leaks emerging online, the buzz around the show has just increased and might as well drive more subscribers for the streaming giant, whose in dire need of them.
Stranger Things Season 4 releases on May 27 on Netflix with the first five episodes. The runtime of each episode is known to be pretty long, and the second part with four more episodes is slated to release on July 1.
