Creator Craig Mazin Confirms Start of Filming Date for The Last of Us S2

Summary:

  • Creator Craigg Mazin finally confirms a start of shooting date for the Last of Us season 2.
  • Fans can’t expect season 2 before the end of 2025 because of complicated plots and lack of shooting dates for stars like Pedro Pascal.
  • They can speed up production if shooting and editing is done simultaneously. However it seems like an improbable choice.

Nearly a year after the gorefest of a finale, we have gotten a definitive start of shoot date for The Last of Us season 2.

Based on Naughty Dog’s post-apocalyptic open-world game of the same name, the show features Ellie and Joel as they travel across the length of the country to find a way to use Ellie’s superhuman immunity- the only way to save the world from the catastrophic Cordyceps fungi.

Despite season 1 receiving positive reviews and becoming an instant hit, season 2’s confirmation took a long time due to the onset of the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes.

Showrunner Craig Mazin finally reveals the start-of-shooting date in an appearance on ‘A Night in the Writers Room’ panel by Variety

This confirmation from Mazin comes just a few days after HBO CEO Casey Bloys let it slip that filming would begin early in 2024.

The Last of Us season 2 is set to start filming on February 12, 2024, almost one year after the premiere of season 1.

However, for fans, start-of-filming dates are of little significance compared to premiere speculations. So, when can we expect The Last of Us season 2 to premiere?

If we look at season 1, the episodes took more than a year to complete production, with some additional shooting taking place later on. Moreover, going by Mazin’s lofty ambitions, season 2 could take even longer to produce, with talks of it being split into two parts.

If our calculations are accurate, then the likely release date for The Last of Us season 2 seems to be late 2025. Moreover, Pedro Pascal is selling like hotcakes in the Hollywood market right now with talks of him leading the MCU’s Fantastic Four reboot. Therefore, securing continuous shooting dates with him might be an ordeal that wasn’t present during the season 1 filming.

One way to speed up the arrival of The Last of Us season 2 on HBO would be to edit the show while it is being filmed. However, this would require the production to shoot the scenes in the same order as they appear in the story, which is very rare for most shows, especially ones with a big budget, like the video game adaptation.

Regardless of the future, confirming a concrete shooting date is a breath of fresh air for fans who want to resume the fight against the zombie fungi as soon as possible!

Got the rare talent to binge an entire show in a single sitting just like that. Although a sucker for psychological thrillers, no bias for any genre when it comes to a good story. A living proof that Netflix and chill is not a myth!
