Is there any Romance in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33?

There are four main characters in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33– Gustave, Lune, Maelle and Sciel.

You might assume that Gustave will have a happy ending written for him. After all, that is how the game begins, with Gustave and Sophie.

However, as you will find out soon enough their love story tragically ends. Coping with her loss, Gustave joins the expedition.

So, is there any romance in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33?

The answer is no. The expedition members only have one goal in mind– save Lumiére.

However, this doesn’t mean that any sort of relationship is out of the question. There are meaningful bonds among the members. They go beyond your usual definition of love and friendship. You might even call it romantic but it is much more complicated than that. 

Gustave is seen mourning Sophie throughout the game. Even after her demise, she is mentioned every now and then.

Maelle is the youngest out of the lot. She is in that stage of her life where one is figuring themselves out. As you might expect, romance takes a backseat in this phase.

That leaves Lune and Sciel. Their relationship cannot be termed as “just friends”. While calling them lovers is also not correct, their bond comes from a place of care and respect for each other.

Since there is a medley of characters in Expedition 33, you might be disappointed at the lack of romance. However, the intense action and plot makes up for it. So, are you ready to save Lumiére?
