PlayStation 5 Pro specifications revealed amidst rumors of Q4 launch

Summary

  • Reputed tech and gaming media outlet Industry Insiders have revealed the specifications for the PlayStation 5 Pro.
  • The PlayStation 5 Pro will offer higher bandwidth, a performance mode for CPUs, and better-performing accelerated compute units.
  • Performance improvements are seen across the board, with the speculated release date being Q4 2024.

The PlayStation 5 Pro rumors have gained traction over the past few months. Industry Insiders have put the launch date as the fourth quarter of 2024.

Reputed hardware and gaming forum Insider Gaming has revealed the specifications for the PlayStation 5 Pro. New information shows that the PS5 Pro will feature 576 GB/s of memory bandwidth, the CPU will feature a High-Frequency Mode that increases the clock frequency by 10%, and the Accelerated Compute Unit will operate at a higher clock speed, resulting in better AV performance.

The PS5 Pro will feature a more efficient form of the standard PS5’s memory, providing 576 GB/s bandwidth. In comparison, the PS5 offers 448 GB/s of bandwidth. Thus, at least a 28% performance improvement is seen.

The physical CPU remains the same as the base variant of PS5. However, the “High CPU Frequency Mode” increases the CPU clocks by 10% to 3.85 GHz.

One exciting feature is that the total power draw remains constant. This means that when the CPU is allocated more power in the High CPU frequency mode, the GPU will be downclocked by 1.5%, resulting in a meager 1% lower GPU performance.

The Accelerated Compute Units run at higher clock speeds, making the Audio Compression Manager faster by 35%. This means that more convolution can be processed, resulting in better immersion and quick calculation of the Fast Fourier Transform or Inverse Fast Fourier Transform, resulting in more efficient signal processing.

The GPU specs remain the same, as revealed earlier. A 45% increment in rendering performance compared to the PS5 is noted, with a ray tracing performance increasing twice to four times.

The GPU boasts 33.5 TFLOPS of computation power and a PlayStation Spectral Super-Resolution Upscaling solution built into it, similar to Nvidia’s DLSS or AMD’s FSR. An AI accelerator is also present, supporting 300 TOPS of 8-bit computation or 67 TFLOPS of 16-bit floating point.

An interesting point noted by Tom Henderson of Insider Gaming is that the PS5 Pro will be made “competitive” by having a detachable disk drive along with 1 TB of storage.

The PS5 Pro is currently running on SKD 9.00. The next SKD, i.e., SKD 10.00, is expected in Fall 2024, around the console’s targeted release date.
