Let’s take a quick look at the most important story reveals from Percy Jackson episode 3, titled “We Visit the Garden Gnome Emporium.”

1. The Oracle of Delphi Gives Percy a Task

Episode 3 begins with Percy going up in the attic of a big house in Camp Half-Blood. In the attic, he sees the famous Oracle of Delphi, a Greek mythological device of sorts that predicts the future.

In the Percy Jackson universe, if you want to embark on a quest as a demigod, you have to visit the Oracle to get a prophecy. For Percy, the Oracle takes up the form of Gabe, his stepfather, and gives him a sneak peek into his destiny.

Here’s what the Oracle said :

“You shall go west and face the god who has turned, and you shall find what was stolen and see it safely returned. You shall be betrayed by the one who calls you friend, and fail to save what matters most in the end.”

2. Percy Takes Annabeth and Grover on the Quest

After hearing his prophecy, Percy chooses his friends Annabeth and Grover to accompany him on his first quest. One of the lines the Oracle said, “You shall be betrayed by the one who calls you friend”, so Percy wanted to choose only those whom he actually trusts.

Percy can only blindly trust Annabeth and Grover, so he chooses them over anyone else. He could see Annabeth and him being friends and was already close to Grover. He wants to prove the Oracle’s prediction about his friends wrong.

3. The Truth of Thalia Revealed

Percy Jackson episode 3 mentions Thalia for the first time. She is the forbidden daughter of Zeus, the King of the Gods, and was apparently killed when Luke and Annabeth first came to Camp Half-Blood.

However, episode 3 reveals that Thalia did not actually die. She alone fought a group of monsters to help Annabeth and Luke make it to Camp Half-Blood safely. To honor her sacrifice and make her immortal, Zeus turned her into a pine tree that still protects Camp Half-Blood from monsters.

As long as Thalia stands as a tree at the camp’s entrance, monsters cannot enter the zone.

4. Hades’ Plan is Quite Confusing

Episode 3 reveals that the Furies actually work for Hades, and they were sent to Earth to get hold of Percy.

We first see Mrs. Dodds, aka Alecto, in episode 1 when Percy believes she wants to kill him. But episode 3 confirms that she is a Furies and works for Hades. She wants to capture Percy and bring him to Hades.

However, the reason is unknown, and we don’t know much about Hades’s plan yet. You know what happens if you’ve read the books, but let’s not spoil it for our viewers!

5. Medusa’s Backstory Explained

Medusa is one of the most well-known characters from classical Greek mythology. In Percy Jackson, episode 3, we see Medusa for the first time.

The garden gnome emporium belongs to Medusa. As per Greek mythology, Medusa can turn anyone into stone by looking at them. She was cursed by Annabeth’s mother, Athena. She has snakes for hair, and we also get to know her tragic backstory in the episode.

Although Medusa is usually perceived as an evil seductress in Greek mythology, the Percy Jackson books (and the series) try to give her a voice. (Although she dies, they don’t do a good job).

Medusa tells Annabeth her true story in episode 3. She was originally a devoted priestess to Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom. Once, Poseidon visited her temple and tried to establish sexual relations with her.

Although it seems like Medusa had sex with Poseidon in the temple, Medusa is actually a victim if we go by the original story. Poseidon violated her honor.

Therefore, when Athena finds out about Poseidon and Medusa, she curses Medusa. No man who would ever look at Medusa would live to tell his story. As a result, whoever looks at Medusa turns into stone.

Medusa also offers to help Percy find his mother, as she believes they share a connection for being used by the same man, Poseidon. However, she asked him to give up his friends, Annabeth and Grover. Percy declines the offer.

6. Percy Kills Medusa and Sends her Severed Head to Olympus

When Percy declines Medusa’s offer, she sees the demigods as representatives of their parents. Since both Poseidon and Athena wronged her, she tries to kill their children to send a message to the gods.

The trio fights Medusa and manages to kill her. Percy cuts off her head and mails her severed head back to the gods in Olympus to send a message about their cruelty towards the priestess.

7. The Location of Olympus Revealed

Episode 3 also reveals the location of Olympus, the home of the Greek gods as per mythology. It is revealed that Olympus is located in the Empire State Building.

As per classical mythology, the Greek gods reside at the top of Mount Olympus. But in the real world, the mountain does not exist. In the Percy Jackson universe, the entrance to Olympus is through the Empire State Building in New York City.

Hermes, the messenger of the gods, accompanies Percy and his friends to the home of the gods. One has to use a magical key to reveal a hidden button to the 600th floor in the elevator. Since the building has only 102 floors, Olympus is located above the building within the clouds.
