When Saturn orders the Marines to aim their guns at Bonney, she slips into her father’s memories to escape the horror in front of her. The flashback takes us to the Sorbet Kingdom, where a young Kuma lives peacefully with his parents until the World Government discovers their Buccaneer bloodline.

The family is enslaved, and Kuma is torn from his mother. Things only get worse from there. His father, Clapp, tries to keep his son’s spirit alive by dancing and telling stories of the Sun God Nika, but is killed right in front of Kuma. It’s a gut-wrenching scene, showing how early Kuma was forced to grow up in a world that gave him no kindness.

Years later, we see Kuma again, now a teenager and still a slave, brought to God Valley for a brutal “hunting contest” held by the Celestial Dragons. He tries to run, even begs to be killed so he doesn’t have to go back.

But it’s here that he meets two other young slaves, Ivankov and Ginny, who hatch a plan to survive. Their shared pain begins to forge the foundation of future friendships and revolutions.
