The movie is inspired by the novel Akazukin, Tabi no Tochu de Shitai to Deau by Aito Aoyagi, which follows Red Riding Hood as a savvy sleuth who solves murders in different fairy tales, such as Cinderella and Hänsel and Gretel. This enchanting fresh take on the timeless fairy tales, directed by Yuichi Fukuda, will premiere on Netflix on September 14.

Netflix has dropped the trailer for Once Upon a Crime, which features Red Riding Hood and Cinderella meeting for the first time, dancing at a glamorous ball, and discovering a sinister plot involving Cinderella’s legendary glass slippers. Watch the trailer here-

The trailer also reveals the character of the prince, who is romantically involved with Cinderella and is befriended by Red Riding Hood. He is seen dancing with Cinderella at the ball, but he soon becomes a suspect in the murder and is arrested despite his claims of innocence.

Once Upon a Crime could appeal to fans of Once Upon a Time and Grimm, two popular television shows that reimagined classic fairy tales in a contemporary setting.

In Once Upon a Time, Snow White and Red Riding Hood were allies, Peter Pan was Rumplestiltskin’s father, and Rumplestiltskin was both the Crocodile for Captain Hook and the Beast for Belle. Similarly, Once Upon a Crime features Cinderella and Red Riding Hood as friends who assume roles that are different from their original stories.

The crossover of these characters is a fascinating premise, but the Once Upon a Crime trailer emphasizes that the story focuses on their murder investigation. Grimm successfully blended police drama with fairy tale fantasy. Once Upon a Crime can achieve a similar effect by using well-known fairy tale characters and elements while anchoring itself as a thriller.

Once Upon a Crime could pave the way for more movies where Red Riding Hood investigates murders from other fairy tales as she does in the original novel.

It could be similar to Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot novels and films, or Benoit Blanc in Rian Johnson’s Knives Out films, where each story features a different case with a different set of characters, but always with the same detective as the main character solving the case. This way, Once Upon a Crime could mark the start of a new fairy tale murder mystery franchise for Netflix.
