Michael C Hall Prefers New Blood’s Finale over Dexter’s Ending

SPOILERS AHEAD! This page contains spoilers from Dexter: New Blood.

In Dexter: New Blood’s finale, the titular character dies at the hands of his own son. Michael C Hall reveals that this is the ending he is most satisfied with.

Fans first bid adieu to Dexter Morgan in 2013 when the show rounded up after an eight-season run. But both fans and Hall did not like the way things were wrapped up — Hall himself has expressed so a couple of times. As such, New Blood offered the actor a do-over.

While Dexter was able to lay low for a while, his first kill with Kurt Caldwell led him down a slippery slope. During this process, he even managed to rekindle his relationship with son Harrison, who also has a dark passenger of his own.

But when Dexter realizes he can no longer control his urges, he pleads with Harrison to end his life. It is an emotional, hard-hitting moment when Harrison pulls the trigger. But according to Hall (and showrunner Clyde Phillips), it was tragic but inevitable.

The way the season concludes is one that resonates with me. It feels justifiable. As upsetting as it may be, I hope audiences will appreciate the resonance of Dexter dying this way at the hands of his son.

Hall is aware that fan reactions will be divisive, just like they were when the show first ended. While some may have expected this ending, others will be entirely shocked or even disappointed by it.

He does point out that a majority of fans complained how Dexter’s open ending left them with no sense of closure. “I guess you have to be careful what you wish for,” he concludes at New Blood’s ending that has no room for speculation.

The story does not need to end with Dexter. Phillips has been vocal about the possibility of carrying forward the show focusing on Harrison and the battle with his version of the dark passenger.

If Showtime does deem Dexter: New Blood’s ratings good enough, we may see Harrison return in a second season or a spinoff.

About Dexter

Dexter is a cult classic crime drama series that first aired on Showtime. The show’s first season was derived from the novel Darkly Dreaming Dexter (2004), the first in a series of novels by Jeff Lindsay. It was adapted for television by James Manos Jr., who wrote the first episode. Subsequent seasons evolved independently of Lindsay’s works.

Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) is introduced as a serial killer who kills other killers who have escaped from, or haven’t been found by the justice system. By day he is a blood spatter analyst who works for the Homicide Department of the Miami Metro Police.
