Jordan Elsass, who played Jonathan Kent in the popular CW series, Superman & Lois, spoke up for the first time about his sudden exit from the DC show.
Jonathan Kent is one of Clark Kent and Lois Lane’s twin sons and played a significant role in the series. Superman & Lois premiered on the CW in January 2021 and has two seasons so far. The show is scheduled to return with a third season in 2023.
It was announced last week that Jordan Elsass will not be reprising his role as Jonathan Kent in Season 3. Though Warner Bros. issued a statement, the reasons behind his sudden exit were kept under wraps. No one associated with the series made any statement about Elsass’ departure either.
In a recorded cameo video for a fan via TVLine, Elsass spoke about his departure for the first time in public.
Elsass explained that though he was excited about Season 3, he had to prioritize his mental health over it. Read his entire statement below.
“It’s been a tough few weeks, as you might imagine, with everything going on with the show. It’s sad, it’s a real shame. I know that I was pumped for Season 3, for sure, but what are you going to do? Anyway, mental health is definitely 100-percent priority. It’s pinnacle. It’s got to take precedence. And mine has been … the last couple of years … it’s been rough. I need some time to myself. I’m still debating whether I’m even going to act for a while. I may go in a different direction. I know that’s definitely going to be disappointing to some people.”
The plan is now to recast Jonathan Kent’s role immediately. However, no actor has been signed yet. This is not the first time CW had to deal with recasting a major role from a DC series. Previously, Ruby Rose also walked out of Batwoman, owing to behind-the-scene issues.
However, Elsass left the show due to personal reasons, as he explained himself. His decision to walk out of Superman & Lois due to mental health issues is an admirable one. Various celebrities have started to take such an approach in recent times. Hopefully, Elsass’ co-stars will support his decision.
