A live-action King Kong series is reportedly in development by James Wan and Stephanie Folsom for Disney+.
King Kong is one of the most popular figures in the Monsterverse and an iconic figure in cinema. His 1933 film created a landmark moment in motion picture history. King Kong was first created by filmmaker Merian C. Cooper.
After the 1933 movie, King Kong appeared on the big screen several times, from the 1976 remake to Peter Jackson’s 2005 remake. More recently, he has become a part of Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures’ MonsterVerse franchise, making appearances in Kong: Skull Island (2017) and Godzilla vs. Kong (2021).
According to Deadline, a new live-action series featuring King Kong is in the early stages of development for Disney+. The series will be produced by Aquaman director, James Wan, and written by Stephanie Folsom.
The upcoming series will be a serialized action drama and will focus on the mythology and the origin of Kong as well as that of Skull Island. It will also delve into the various supernatural elements of his home. The Merian C. Cooper Estate and artist Joe DeVito will collaborate for the series’ source material.
The upcoming King Kong series will not be a part of the MonsterVerse. However, Netflix is also reportedly developing an animated series set in Skull Island that will be connected to the MonsterVerse. But it is not known whether King Kong will be a part of it or not.
Meanwhile, Kong will appear on the big screen again in the sequel to Godzilla vs. Kong, scheduled to release on March 15, 2024.
Following the success of Skull Island in 2017, there were talks of developing a live-action King Kong series. However, it never happened and might have morphed into this new Disney+ project. It will be interesting to see how Disney’s treatment of Kong and Skull Island will differ from that of MonsterVerse.
