The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 is in Limbo as Jack Black Shares Disappointing Update

Summary

  • Jack Black, who plays Browser in ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ reveals that there’s been ‘radio-silence’ about the development of a sequel.
  • The delay is likely due to several reasons, like the SAG-AFTRA/WGA strikes in 2023 and the makers taking more time to rework the script to please the critics.
  • Finally, Nintendo is likely to focus on the Legend of Zelda movie adaptation before coming back to the Super Mario franchise.

‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ star Jack Black has come up with a disappointing update on its sequel movie. The actor stars in the film as Browser, Mario’s archnemesis, who desperately wants to capture the Mushroom Kingdom and marry Princess Peach.

Despite the mixed reviews, ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ killed it at the box office, earning over $1.36 billion worldwide and becoming the second-highest-grossing film in 2023 after ‘Barbie’.

In an interview with Variety, Jack Black reveals that he’s encountered ‘radio-silence’ about the sequel movie since the first movie’s release. However, he remains hopeful and has even pitched his own idea for what the story should be for the sequel. Read his comments below:

It has been radio silence. The only chatter has been coming from me, and I don’t even know if I’m allowed to chatter. I’ve been chomping at the bit to get back to business. [I’m pitching the title] “Bowser’s Revenge”. I think it should be a full musical, like what Todd Phillips is supposedly doing with Joker 2.

Even before the first film hit the theaters, there was a buzz about a possible sequel to the Super Mario Bros. Movie. Nintendo’s chief, Shuntaro Furukawa, publicly expressed his desire to make a follow-up if the first film was a hit. Moreover, there were speculations about a spin-off featuring Donkey Kong being in the works, but those weren’t officially verified.

After ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ smashed all box office expectations, Nintendo announced that they were planning to make more adaptations of their franchises. However, they never mentioned anything to confirm a sequel to Super Mario Bros. movie.

If we dig deep into the matter, we’ll discover several reasons for this delay. Firstly, The WGA and the SAG-AFTRA strikes in 2023 delayed virtually everything creative in America for several months.

Additionally, ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ garnered mixed reviews from the critics and earned a measly 59% rating on Rotten Tomatoes despite an overwhelming box-office success.

Therefore, the creative team is likely taking more time to determine what worked and what didn’t and how they can make the sequel appealing to both fans and critics.

Finally, the sequel is likely being delayed due to Nintendo’s overwhelming focus on the recently announced Legend of Zelda movie adaptation.

However, ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ cast seems extremely eager to return to sets for the sequel. So, we will get a concrete update next year for sure!.
