Intel’s upcoming Meteor Lake processors are coming for Desktop in 2024

Intel’s Raptor Lake Refresh processors have been virtually confirmed via the numerous benchmarks leaked on the Chinese outlet BiliBili.

In an interview with PCWorld on Youtube, Intel’s Executive Vice President and General Manager of Client Computing Group, Michelle Johnston Holtahus, confirmed that the Meteor Lake CPU series will be coming in desktop and mobile variants, with the desktop version launching in 2024.

Breaking Down Intel's Strategy For Meteor Lake & Beyond

This comes after the Meteor Lake, dubbed “Core Ultra,” was spotted at the Intel Innovation Event earlier this week. The mobile variant will reportedly be released on December 14th.

The previous plan reportedly was to launch the first-generation Core Ultra CPUs for desktops based on Meteor Lake in the final quarter of 2023. In the interview, Michelle Johnston confirmed that Intel ideally does not want to separate lines for mobile and desktop processors.

She confirmed that Meteor Lake-S will have a top-to-bottom architecture spanning the entire mobile and desktop segment. With the CES 2024 coming up, the Meteor Lake is expected to feature if they release it by December 14th.

The Meteor Lake CPUs are expected to draw heavily from their Meteor Lake-P siblings. It is expected to be rated at 65W.

An earlier presentation slide showed MTL-S SKUs, based on the LGA1851 socket, being limited to 35W and 65W TDPs. This means the Meteor Lake-S will be restricted to i3 and i5 product lines.

The terminology is also being changed from Core i5 to Core Ultra 5. The Meteor Lake-S CPUs will be a welcome update over the Raptor Lake Refresh.

This is because the Raptor Lake Refresh SKUs do not provide much benefit over the previous generation other than increased clock speed and a new i7 SKU.

In comparison, the Meteor Lake lineup will have new P-cores based on the Redwood Cove architecture and E-cores based on the Crestmont architecture. They will have embedded Intel Arc Xe-LPG graphics to provide stiff competition to AMD’s integrated GPUs. The launch of the Meteor Lake CPUs will shake up the processor market as a whole.
