Taming magical beasts can be pretty fun in Hogwarts Legacy. However, they play a more critical role in the game than just serving as cute pets. Some materials found on them, such as their feather and fur, can be used to upgrade gear.
The action RPG based on the Wizarding World has many magical beasts to interact with. There are particular ways to locate and capture them on the map.
Some players might have trouble finding and catching Thestrals in the game’s open world. They can visit the various dens on the map and explore the area. Let’s get into further details.
Obtaining Thestral Hair in Hogwarts Legacy.
Thestral Hair is one of the strongest wand cores alongside Dragons and Basilisk. Notably, it was the core of the Elder Wand, the most powerful wand. There are two ways of obtaining Thestral Hair in Hogwarts Legacy:
- Purchasing them from the Brood and Peck shop at Hogsmeade Village for 400 Galleons.
- You can also get the hair by nurturing the creatures in the Room of Requirement. Head over to the Vivarium to tame, feed and pet them, and they will drop their hair.
You can use the Hair to create Traits and upgrade your Gear with the Enchanted Loom in the Room of Requirement.
Where to get Thestrals in Hogwarts Legacy?
Players can get the Thestrals by visiting the dens on the map. Since these dens require much exploration, here are the locations of Thestrals below.
- North Ford Bog – This is at the northern edge of the map. Walking is not advisable because of the distance, so flying using your broom is better. The closest fast travel point is East North Ford Bog, though you can also use San Bakar’s Tower or others nearby.
- Marunween Lake – The other Hogwarts Legacy Thestral Location is Marunweem Lake. It would be best to cut through the mountain tunnel in Coastal Cavern/Poidsear Coast to get there.
Then continue heading east past the lake. The den is also close to where you will do the main quest In the Shadow of the Mountain.
Before looking for these skeletal horses, ensure you’ve completed the main quest called “The Elf, The Nab-Sack, and The Loom.” By doing so, you will get a Nab-Sack from Deek the Elf.
These beasts can be used for flying around the map but can be pretty tricky to catch. They are highly agile and can easily outpace you by flying or galloping away, so you won’t have much luck chasing after them with Nab-Sack.
You can make your life much easier by using the several magical spells accessible to you in Hogwarts Legacy. Stay undetected as you get close to the creature you set your sight on. The Disillusionment spell will help with this as you approach the Thestral Den.
Only after successfully getting behind one of these Thestrals can you have a good chance of capturing them using the following combination of spells. Start with two Accios to draw it closer, then use a Levioso to keep the creature from flying or sprinting away.
Only after this can you bring out Nab-Sack to capture the creature. Arresto Momentum or Glacius can be alternatives to Levioso.
How to unlock and fly Thestral Mount?
To unlock Thestrals as a mount in Hogwarts Legacy, you must own the Dark Arts Pack (included in Deluxe Edition, Collector Editions, and sold separately after 10th February). If you do, the mount will be given after “The High Keep” main quest.
Secondly, in Hogwarts Legacy, you must complete “The High Keep” main quest to unlock and fly on Hippogriff and Thestral Mount. The mission is engaging, full of Hogwarts Legacy Lore and valuable loot for players to collect.
The quest requirements are:
- Complete Professor Garlick’s Assignment 1 mission
- Unlock Wingardium Leviosa Spell
During The High Keep quest, you need to help Natty investigate a case of beast poaching at the ruins of a castle.
On arriving at Folbarton Castle, you learn that poachers captured two Hippogriffs, Highwig and Onyx. Ensure you check all the chests and side rooms during the quest. If you want to speed the search up, you can use the Disillusionment spell to sneak your way to the end.
You will eventually start a cutscene with Highwing the Hippogriff and unlock the new mounts. Now, all you need to do is go to your gear inventory, and on the right, in the mounts slot, you should be able to pick your new Thestral.
In case you pre-ordered the game, you also unlock Onyx Hippogirff.
