Money Heist Finale Ending Explained: Does the Series Have a Happy Ending?

One of the most popular shows on Netflix, Money Heist, ended in 2021, but people haven’t stopped talking about it. The series still remains one of the most-watched shows on Netflix almost two years after its emotional finale.

The Money Heist finale was a bittersweet one, dealing with various emotions and addressing multiple socio-political issues. Lives were lost, hearts were broken, and sacrifices had to be made.

The fifth and final season of Money Heist was released in two parts. The first part ended with the hostages inside the Royal Bank of Spain opening fire at the robbers, with Arturo Roman leading the rebellion. What follows is a bloody encounter that ends with the tragic death of one of the most popular characters of the series, Tokyo.

Tokyo was also the narrator of the series, so a lot of things changed in Money Heist season 5, part 2, including the perspective through which we were hearing the story.

In season 5, part 2, The Professor surrenders to the police but gives them false information about the gold. By the time he surrenders, he has already made arrangements to steal the gold via a fake police raid and get it out of the danger zone.

We find out that Berlin’s ex-wife, Tatiana, and his son, Rafael, stole the gold from the bank. Aware that Tamayo is not aware of the gold, The Professor negotiates with him. He promises to return the gold in exchange for their freedom.

Tamayo agrees to his proposal as he has no other option at this point. This is because videos of the gold being extracted by the robbers became viral among the public, and the Spanish economy crashed overnight.

The gang is allowed to escape. However, Tamayo and the police force realize that the gold they got is not real gold but gold-painted brass. To avert an economic crisis and save their face, the police do not reveal the truth about the gold to the public. Moreover, they also declare that all the members of the gang died in an encounter.

2. Does Money Heist have a happy ending?

Money Heist has a fairly happy ending. The series ends with the robbers escaping with the gold and starting their lives afresh. The Spanish government also prevents an economic crisis by lying about the gold while The Professor and his gang successfully pull off another heist.

Helsinki and Palermo will enjoy some fun time together, and Marseille will adopt a pet. Rio does not seem to be over Tokyo yet, but he begins his career as a professional while honoring Tokyo’s memories.

Although the gang loses many friends, lovers, and family members over the course of the series, it helps them remain united and come out stronger. The gang manages to pull off the heist successfully despite all odds.

The completion of the heist also honors Berlin’s memories, as we know from the flashbacks that the heist was his idea. The Professor is able to make his brother proud, while Tatiana and Rafael also do their bit to honor Berlin’s memories.

3. The Ending of Money Heist Reveals A Dark Truth About Society

At its core, Money Heist has always been a show about the evils of capitalism. The series acts as a symbol of resistance.

The ending of the show proves that our idea of security and comfort is a sham and we’re always in danger. The Spanish government did not tell anyone they could not retrieve the gold.

Despite the gold being fake, they behave like it is right. It proves that the government is corrupt and can protect us or put us in danger based on their own benefits.

The heists are not only intended to steal money but it is also to urge people to step up and rebel against the government. It is to prove to them how hollow the system is that even ordinary people can rattle the people in power.

The robbers become heroes in the public eye and immortal in history. The ending resonates with the theme of the series and perfectly sums up its message.

4. About Money Heist

Money Heist (Spanish: La casa de papel, meaning “The House of Paper”) is a Spanish heist crime drama television series created by Álex Pina.

The series traces two long-prepared heists led by the Professor (Álvaro Morte), one on the Royal Mint of Spain, and one on the Bank of Spain. The narrative is told in a real-time-like fashion and relies on flashbacks, time-jumps, hidden character motivations, and an unreliable narrator for complexity.

The show focuses on the meticulous plans and the specific contingencies of the Professor who has prepared his group of robbers dressed in red jumpsuits and Dali masks.
