James Cameron’s second Avatar film just premiered in theaters with promising reviews by the critics and splendid audience reaction. While everyone raves about the stunning visuals and the moving story, Cameron’s pointed out yet another showstopper in the 2022 sequel.
The director opens up about how the movie elaborates on female empowerment by featuring female warriors who are with child. Who’s he talking about, you ask?
Well, Avatar 2 introduces the Metkayina Clan, the Na’vi of the reef, and among the crowd in the trailers and promotional images, we see Ronal. Ronal is the wife of Tonowari, the leader of the Metkayina clan, and is pregnant.
The trailer features multiple scenes of Kate Winslet’s character, but the shot that impresses us most is when she rides an Ikran and leads other warriors into battle while she is six months pregnant.
In an interview with Variety, James Cameron spoke about including this detail to go to the depths of the “rabbit hole of female empowerment.”
Everybody’s always talking about female empowerment. But what is such a big part of a woman’s life that we, as men, don’t experience? And I thought, well, if you’re really going to go all the way down the rabbit hole of female empowerment, let’s have a female warrior six months pregnant in battle.
The director also added that this was the “last bastion” that people haven’t previously experienced in the fictional world of cinema.
It doesn’t happen in our society — it probably hasn’t happened for hundreds of years. But I guarantee you, back in the day, women had to fight for survival and protect their children, and it didn’t matter if they were pregnant. And pregnant women are more capable of being a lot more athletic than we, as a culture, acknowledge. I thought, ‘Let’s take the real boundaries off.’ To me, it was the last bastion that you don’t see.
The trailer also featured a moment where Neytiri hunts while pregnant, and this inclusion really does outreach the boundaries of female empowerment in the filmmaking business. This detail will only be one of many that set apart Cameron’s work from the other Hollywood blockbusters released around the same time.
