How Jake Gyllenhaal’s ‘Road House’ 2024 Remake Compares with the 1989 Classic

Summary

  • 2024’s Road House, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, is more of an interpretation of the 1989 classic.
  • The new adaptation will have a concoction of violence and comedy, and the nudity will be mellowed down, too.
  • The protagonist, Dalton, will have a different backstory as a UFC fighter in the remake.

Streaming giant Prime Video is about to launch Road House, and some people are calling it a remake of the 1989 action flick starring Patrick Swayze. However, they may not be entirely accurate.

The old Road House featured Swayze as a bouncer in a New York club who takes the job of a security guard in a bar in Mississippi.

Although hated by critics upon release, 1989’s Road House slowly grew on the fans to eventually become a cult classic. Therefore, fans are wondering whether it is a good idea to reboot Road House with Jake Gyllenhaal in the lead.

The first teaser of Jake Gyllenhaal’s Road House was revealed in Prime Video’s 2024 preview, and it immediately sparked comparisons with the original film’s sensuality, violence, and Swayze’s finesse.

However, based on reports about Jake Gyllenhaal’s new version, the remake label may not be accurate.

The original film is deeply entrenched in its era, and making a like-for-like remake of the film is exceptionally challenging. Therefore, we can safely say that Jake Gyllenhaal’s version will be more like an interpretation of the cult classic, keeping the period in mind.

Some visual and aesthetic changes are already evident from the teaser. We will come across more differences as more titbits from the filming process are revealed online.

Prime Video’s teaser is enough for wide-eyed fans to realize that the remake won’t have the quintessential 80’s vibe like its predecessor. Although the remake is rated ‘R,’ it seems like the elevated levels of violence will be diffused by comedic undertones to strike the perfect balance in the film.

Furthermore, the ratings also suggest that while violence will be maintained, the nudity in the film will be reduced.

Besides tone and aesthetics, the plot also gets a massive revamp in the new film. In 1989’s Road House, Dalton’s past was kept a secret. However, in the remake, Jake Gyllenhaal’s UFC history will be a significant forte of his character, and the plot will be modified accordingly.
