New season, new Roach! Henry Cavill took to Instagram to post images of his horse training as he prepares for The Witcher Season 3 ahead of production.
The brown steed that accompanied Geralt of Rivia since the beginning of the series met the saddest demise of the season in Episode 6, titled Dear Friend, when she’s attacked by a Chernobog.
(Geralt saying his eulogy while gently putting her out of her misery is enough to make a grown man cry.)
Later in the season, Geralt got another mare from Yarpen Zigrin and his men and named her Roach – something the Witcher does to all of his horses.
A jet black horse named Hector will take over as the new Roach for Season 3. Although Roach is supposed to be a mare in the lore, stallions are used during the filming process.
The images show Hector with his mane tied in a braid. Cavill wrote in the caption that he rode with Hector through the mountains and also tagged the series’ horse master, Laszlo Juhász.
In order to see Geralt and Roach bond on-screen, it’s important for Hector and Cavill to get acquainted and become friends off-screen first. As Cavill called it, “He’s showing some promise.”
In January, executive producer Steve Gaud posted updates on the location scouting process for Season 3. As Season 2 introduced a lot of new creatures and concepts, Gaud’s captions promised that Season 3 would be even bigger.
Gaud’s Instagram page is filled with prep photos of incomplete sets, construction, and tiny glimpses of what goes on behind the scenes during the early production stages.
The Witcher Season 3 will pick up where the last season left off and explore more of Ciri and her father, Geralt and Yennefer, and whether Jaskier was “the bard” Dijkstra was referring to at the end. Suffice to say, the new season has a lot of questions to answer when it drops in 2023.
Meanwhile, you can watch the first two seasons of The Witcher on Netflix, read the whole set of novels by Andrzej Sapkowski and play the Witcher games to fill the void.
