Episode 11 of the anime Heike Monogatari was the concluding episode for this season. The Heike army is overwhelmed by the large numbers of the Genji. They incur heavy losses and eventually lose.
Tokuko’s mother takes Emperor Antoku in her arms and jumps into the sea. Everyone follows suit, including Tokuko, but Biwa saves her. In the end, to escape suffering, she becomes a nun. People were too invested in this anime for it to end on such a sad note (it is me, I am “people”). Will anything ever be the same again?
Episode 12 Speculations
People are infuriated that Go-Shirakawa would go to war against his grandson and then claim to be all innocent. Even more furious that Tokuko would forgive him. Someone needs to forgive, but it shouldn’t have to be Tokuko all the time.
Biwa was finally shown to be the white-haired lady who sang the story of the Heike, but all of us knew that. If there is a next season, fans are curious about what might happen with the Heike prisoners, like Munemori.

Episode 11 Recap
“The Buddha’s temple bells toll the message, that all existence is impermanent.”
The Genji and the Heike go to war at sea, with Genji announcing they’re higher in numbers. The Heike yell that they have more experience fighting at sea.
In the beginning, the dark clouds dissipate, and the Heike make full use of it. Tomomori seems to have the upper hand over Yoshitsune, and they successfully push quite a few Genji boats towards the whirlpool.
Soon tides change, and a storm comes. The wind is on Genji’s side this time, and they overpower their foe in no time. Munemori flees to save his own skin. Tomomori fights as the situation takes a turn for the worse and his ship capsizes.
A deserter from the Heike side informs the Genji that the emperor is on one of the smaller boats. Tomomori swims over to inform them of this, and this is when Tokuko’s mother takes the decision to call it quits.
She decides that losing the title of the emperor will make his life worse. Tokuko’s mother takes the child in her arms and tells him there is a dragon city to rule in the sea. Then she jumps into the water with Emperor Antoku.
Everyone else, family, ladies in waiting, servants follow suit. Tokuko jumps as well, but Biwa stops her saying this isn’t where her journey ends. Tomomori thinks he’s seen as much as he could see in this life and jumps with an anchor tied around his neck.
Sukemori drowns as well, meaning most of Tokuko’s clan is dead. Later Go-Shirakawa visits a temple, and there we see Tokuko, who has become a nun. He tells her he just wanted the sacred treasures back and didn’t want her whole clan to die.
Tokuko responds how she is somewhat in peace even after she has experienced the worst of fates. She dreamt of the Dragon city in the sea and saw her son there. It must be true.
