Episode 9 Recap

The mysterious three girls who had helped Biwa from Genji soldiers last time turned out to be aspiring shirabiyoshi. They increasingly became fond of Biwa, mentioning how they had seen a retired shirabiyoshi with similar eyes.

Yoshinaka’s men roam around the capital, looting homes, causing discontent among the people and Go-Shirakawa.

Much to Tokuko’s dismay, Go-Shirakawa has installed Emperor Takakura’s son with Lady Shokuko as the emperor. Lord Ogata, previously Shigemori’s ally, was tasked with attacking the Heike by Go-Shirakawa.

Learning of this, Kiyotsune is deeply saddened that principles of loyalty, trust, and righteousness were nothing now. As Sukemori points out, perhaps the Heike never possessed them in the first place.

Such disillusionment, in the end, drives Kiyotsune to suicide, and Biwa watches it happen with her eye. She goes in search of her mother with her new companions and finally meets her.

At first, she was angry that her mother had abandoned her, but in the end, she forgives. Since she can’t change anything, she decides to set her prayers to the tune of her Biwa.

Yoshinaka wants Go-Shirakawa to declare him shogun and is rumored to want to kill Yoritomo. So he sends his younger brother Yoshitsune to kill Yoshinaka, making him die in an inner power struggle.

Biwa decides to go westward, and that is precisely where the Kamakura Genji are headed. After their battle with the Genji, Sukemori flees.

Yoshitsune’s army surprise attacks the Heike from behind. As all-important officials flee, Atsumori realizes he left his flute behind. As he takes it back to camp, a Genji soldier catches him.

At first, the soldier has no qualms about killing a 16-year-old but comes to empathize with him as he realizes they’re both putting their lives on the line for some fragile glory. He kills Atsumori anyway, though.

As one seagull joins another, Biwa watches it all happen, and she vows to bear witness to their story.
