HBO Max Will Launch New App To Fix Glitches

With its stunning, awarding-winning shows, HBO Max is on its way to soaring to new heights. But to get there in due time, they need to ensure their app is without glitches. The streamer will be addressing these issues by launching a new app.

The glitches in the current app came to the forefront when Apple TV users had problems with rewinding, forwarding and captioning. The platform wouldn’t remember the users’ settings, which would result in them having to adjust it at the beginning of every new watch.

For Roku users, the problems went an inch deeper when they experienced lags, freezes and multiple, frustrating crashes that rendered the app unusable.

Want to feel the angst of some users? Here’s a tweet that captures it all:

Now, of course, not all users have experienced this and glitches haven’t hit every single platform. In fact, the streamer fixed them as soon as they could. But their presence is alarming enough if HBO Max wants to deliver good customer experience, not just good TV.

Two sources of the problem have been pointed out: First, the 10 USD ad-support tier involved new technical integrations that could’ve led to the bugs. Second, HBO also expanded to regions outside the USA, which meant the scaled-up language-related captioning could’ve played its part in derailing the streamer’s functions.

These are not excuses, HBO states, as they will now attempt to launch a whole new app, instead of fixing potholes in the existing one. The current app was simply a rework of the HBO Go and HBO Now services and should be done away with.

As an HBO executive tells Vulture, all of HBO’s TV-related apps will be replaced in the upcoming months. The first on the list to receive this bow-wrapped new app will be Roku, followed by PlayStation. Apple TV’s app will be third in line.

The new version once launched won’t be very different from what we already have. But that’s only because it will be built from the ground up and work on fixing existing glitches. Once that’s done, HBO will set its eyes on perfecting the app and even adding more features.
