Craig Erwich, a Disney Television executive, reveals a disappointing update about the revival chances of How I Met Your Father.

The Hulu comedy was a spin-off of the popular 2004 sitcom How I Met Your Mother and revolves around Sophie (Hilary Duff) and her friends navigating through love and life in NYC. The series followed the same format as the original series, with an elder Sophie narrating to her son how she met his father.

How I Met Your Father was canceled after two seasons in 2023 without revealing the father’s identity.

In a recent interview with Deadline, Craig Erwich revealed that they do not have any updates about a potential revival of How I Met Your Father. As of now, the hopes of a proper ending to Sophie’s story may remain unaddressed. Upon being asked about a special film or episode to offer a conclusion, Erwich gave a disappointing reply.

We don’t have any news to share about that right now.

How I Met Your Father season 2 left several questions unanswered. The main mystery of the series, the identity of the father, remained unresolved. The final episode did not offer any clarity about how Valentina and Charlie got together, who Sid ended up with, and whether Jesse and Sophie ended up together.

Moreover, the series served as a spiritual sequel to How I Met Your Mother and featured cameos by two of the five leads of the original show. Neil Patrick Harris made an appearance as Barney Stinson in season 2, while Cobie Smulders appeared in the season 1 finale as Robin Scherbatsky.

However, Josh Radnor, Jason Segel, and Allyson Hannigan never made it to the show. The makers promised more cameos from the original cast, but we never got to know where Ted, Lily, and Marshall stood during the HIMYF timeline.

A stand-up performance by a former writer hinted that Sid could be the titular father. The season 2 finale also subtly hinted at it when Sid’s wife Hannah doubted Sid having something with Sophie. This sparked numerous fan theories, but the makers eventually dismissed them.

As such, we only know that the father is one of the men she met in season 1, episode 1, as it was mentioned in the series. However, there’s no way of finding out who it was unless the makers reveal their initial plans.

The series ended with Sophie getting together with Jesse, though various hints suggested he was not the father. An elder Sophie also reveals that Charlie and Valentina ended up together. Erwich’s update confirms that there is no hope of the show’s revival in the near future. Disney might change its mind if there is enough demand, but it is all speculation at the moment.
