Grand Blue Season 1 Recap

If you’re worried that you’ve forgotten most of the happenings in season 1 of the anime, fret not, because being the episodic anime that it is, not many moments in the anime had a direct influence on the progression of the story. The anime started out with Kitahara Iori starting college in a town next to the seaside, where he gets forced to join a diving club. This club, however, did more drinking and partying than diving, so Iori blended in pretty well even though he was forced to join.

Iori now lives with childhood friends, Kotegawa Chisa and Kotegawa Nana, are also a part of the Peek a Boo diving club. The dynamic between the three is interesting because Iori seems somewhat interested in Chisa (he also seems to be interested in many other girls, but let’s ignore that for now). Meanwhile, Chisa’s sister, who is older than her by a few years, has a sister complex.

Chisa was initially interested in Iori but got completely turned off after seeing how Iori had grown up to become an absolute scumbag (for context, Iori just moved back into the town in which he grew up in with Chisa, Nana and many others). Iori also befriended a hardcore otaku named Imamura Kouhei, with whom he frequently has fights. Besides all the nudity, vulgarity, and parties, this anime does have a major theme: diving.

Iori doesn’t know how to swim, but still decided to try diving because he was drawn to the beauty of what lies under the sea. Unfortunately for him, the season ended with Iori failing his diving test, making him the only member in the club to be ineligible to dive without supervision. Iori was pretty bummed out about this, but bounced back pretty quick thanks to Chisa’s encouragement.

Another aspect of the anime that’s worth mentioning is Iori’s relationship with a character named Hamaoka Azusa, who is also a member of the Peek a Boo club. Due to a few misunderstandings, Azusa thought Iori had a crush on Kouhei, which made her feel close to him, as she had always wanted a bisexual friend. Iori’s inability to clear this misunderstanding has paved the way for many gags in the anime.
