Episode 4 Recap

It’s Halloween, and the city is covered in pumpkin decorations. The story takes place in Ruri’s school, where everyone is busy preparing for the festival. Throughout the first half of the episode, we see students and staff members ambushed by someone or something and dragged away like corpses.

Hiro learns from Ruri that the digivice has a function that lets them turn their Digimon into transparent holograms, invisible to humans without the digivice. Hiro is surprised that Ruri knows something he didn’t, and she tells him that Angoramon is the one who taught her.

Hiro makes a discovery of his own where he learns another feature of the digivice that transports him to the digital world dimension where his actions have no impact in the real world.

Angoramon sits down with the others and tells them more about Digimon and the digital world. He also discusses some possibilities about what could have happened to Hiro’s dad.

Angoramon says that an artificially intelligent virus spread online some time ago, giving birth to various creatures, Digimon. Their world is called the digital world, and it exists alongside the human world. Random gates in the digital world allow Digimon to enter and exit the human world.

Hiro asks Angoramon about Gammamon’s evolution which reversed after the fight. We find that Digimons naturally evolve just like how humans age and that evolving and reverting is a new phenomenon.

We then cut to Pumpkinmon, kidnapping people, trapping their heads inside giant pumpkins, and then carving those pumpkins. Hiro and the others soon discover this, and Hiro decides to take their battle into the new digital dimension to avoid any real damage.

Gammamon evolves into BetelGammamon and defeats Pumpkinmon. It is then revealed that Pumpkinmon just wanted some friends since he felt lonely. Pumpkinmon professes how looking at humans dressed up in pumpkin costumes made him feel seen and hence decided to make several humans look just like him.

Hiro reasons with and tells him that friends didn’t need to look alike. Friends can come in different shapes and sizes, which is enough to calm Pumpkinmon down.

About Digimon

Digimon, short for “Digital Monsters,” is a Japanese media franchise offering toy pets, manga, anime, games, films, and even a trading card game. The franchise was created back in 1997 as a series of virtual pets, influenced by Tamagotchi/nano Giga Pet toys.

The franchise gained momentum with its first anime, Digimon Adventure, and an early video game, Digimon World, both of which were released in 1999.

Digimon, the series focuses on monsters like creatures, who inhabit a “Digital World,” a parallel universe that originated from Earth’s various communication networks. Digimon hatch from eggs called Digi-Eggs, and they go through Digivolution, which changes their appearance and increases their powers over time.

The effect of Digivolution, however, is not permanent. Digimon who have digivolved will find most of the time revert back to their previous form after a battle or if they are too weak to continue. Most of them can even speak.
