Young Sheldon S7E4 Addresses George Cooper’s Cheating Scandal in TBBT

Young Sheldon season 7, episode 4 finally addresses Sheldon Cooper’s infamous cheating theory about his father. Young Sheldon is a spin-off of the popular sitcom The Big Bang Theory, where Sheldon describes his father cheating on his mother.

In The Big Bang Theory season 10, Sheldon tells Penny how he once caught his father cheating when he entered the room without knocking. He explains that it is the reason why he always knocks thrice before entering any room.

Ever since Sheldon’s revelation, viewers of Young Sheldon and TBBT have been looking forward to watching George Cooper’s cheating scandal. The spin-off has been teasing the storyline for a while. In season 4, George Cooper began a relationship with Brenda Sparks, but the plot was quickly dropped.

Season 7 finally picks it up, explaining Sheldon’s Big Bang Theory story.

1. Does Sheldon’s Dad Cheat in Young Sheldon Season 7?

Sheldon’s father, George Cooper, does not cheat on his mother in Young Sheldon season 7. However, as per Sheldon’s Big Bang Theory storyline, he walks in on his father being intimate. Sheldon does not recognize that his father is with his mother, not another woman.

In season 7, episode 4, Sheldon finally returns to East Texas Tech from Germany. Upon arrival, he hears someone talking in a fake German accent. He walks into the room to find his parents, George and Mary Cooper, in an intimate position.

It is understood that Mary Cooper was dressed in traditional German clothes to surprise George. Sheldon walks in on them at this point and gets stunned. He immediately runs away from the house, assuming that his father is with another woman.

The narration of adult Sheldon confirms that it was this moment that he was describing to Penny in The Big Bang Theory. He knocks thrice before entering any room to make sure he does not fall into that situation again.

2. How Young Sheldon’s Story Connects to The Big Bang Theory

In The Big Bang Theory, Sheldon tells Penny that he walked in on his father being intimate with another woman. Therefore, viewers assume that George cheated on Mary at least at some point. However, Young Sheldon explains that Sheldon did not comprehend the situation properly.

Sheldon did not realize that it was Mary who was with George in the room. Given that Mary was dressed in German clothes and wore a wig, a teen Sheldon could not recognize her.

Moreover, he does not take time to process it and runs away from the house. When Sheldon reveals his story in TBBT, it comes across as extremely serious and inappropriate. However, Young Sheldon proves that it was simply another misunderstanding on Sheldon’s part.

3. Why Young Sheldon Does Not Remain True to The Big Bang Theory

Young Sheldon’s portrayal of George Cooper is very different from how he was described in the flagship series. TBBT portrayed Sheldon’s father as unavailable, irresponsible, and a cheater.

However, Young Sheldon’s George is far from that. While the show teases a cheating theory, it never builds up on it. George has always been in love with Mary despite their issues.

The makers have confirmed that Young Sheldon is part of the same universe as The Big Bang Theory. However, they hardly adhere to any stories from Sheldon’s childhood. It can very well be considered a separate take on a central character from the show.
