Destiny 2 Cheat Maker will pay USD 500000 for violating copyright

Game developers like EA deploy anti-cheat measures that are common in most games nowadays. Bungie, however, has taken it to another level.

In an official court document dated September 1st, the US District High Court at the Western District of Washington in Seattle ordered Luca Leone to pay USD 300,000 for using Destiny 2’s official copyrighted artwork as well as inserting code into Destiny 2’s copyrighted code, thus violating the end-user agreement. Additionally, for each new account created after a ban, he was charged USD 2000, with at least 100 such reports.

While this might sound hefty, this is not an exhaustive list. Leone was also charged with cyberstalking Bungie officials. There was a past incident wherein Leon posted the identity card of a community manager online. Leon was thus ordered to stay 1000 feet away from Bungie’s offices and officials.

He was also asked to remove all traces of Bungie and Destiny 2-related content from all social media platforms. The most significant blow is he is permanently banned from accessing any past, present, or future Bungie title.

The cheat software was also ordered to be destroyed and never used again. The financial amount is quite large, totaling USD 500,000.

This sends a clear message to all the cheat-makers and pro-piracy creators, at least concerning live-service titles. However, this is not the first time Bungie has taken such measures.

Earlier in 2022, Bungie found some cheat-makers and charged the entire group an amount totaling USD 14 million. Before that, Bungie had also targeted malicious posts on YouTube that circumvented DMCA rules and shared copyrighted content.

These stringent rules and lawsuits are going to become even more common now. Players would be better off losing a couple of matches than landing a lawsuit and losing their hard-earned money.
