Riverdale is a 2017 original story based around the comic book characters from Archie And Friends, who investigate mysteries and evil forces in their eponymous town after a murder.
The cast includes Lili Reinhart, Camila Mendes, and Cole Sprouse, who play Betty Cooper, Veronica Lodge, and Jughead Jones with KJ Apa as Archie.
The dark and juicy twist to the original Archie Comics has made Riverdale popular and earned it a devoted fanbase. However, after five years of its premiere, CW has announced that the end of the show is now near. Riverdale is set to end after the upcoming seventh season.
In its seven seasons, Riverdale has explored diverse storylines and arcs, all of which are set to end with the upcoming season, scheduled for 2023.
CW CEO and Network Chairman Mark Pedowitz explains that Riverdale will end because it has run its course, a sentiment shared by its creator, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa.
“We had a long conversation with Roberto [Aguirre-Sacasa] yesterday, who is thrilled by this news, and we will treat the show in the manner it deserves . . . We want to make sure it goes out the right way,”
Pedowitz further stated that he is “a big believer in attempting to give shows that have had long runs an appropriate sendoff.”
The cast too seems to be in agreement. Camila Mendes, who plays Veronica, shared a heartfelt post thanking fans and promising a beautiful ending for the show.
KJ Apa opened up shortly after that announcement as well, saying “It’s going to be really hard to say goodbye to Archie, to Riverdale, to the sets, to [the] crew”, adding how “all great things have to come to an end.”
CW has canceled many shows this year as a result of a recent merger between WarnerMedia and Discover into Warner Bros. Low-rated projects such as Dynasty and The 4400 have already been cleared off while a few of DC’s superhero entities such as Batwoman have suffered the same fate.
Luckily, Riverdale has got the opportunity to wind up its story, solely because of all the love from its viewers.
For now, fans can watch the Season 6 finale of Riverdale on May 29.
About Riverdale
Based on a story from the popular Archies Comics, the 2017 Netflix drama Riverdale is centered on an innocent, small town of the same name.
It follows a group of high school students who are shocked by the death of a classmate, Jason Blossom. Together they unravel the secrets of Riverdale and who killed Jason.
Cole Sprouse’s grungy Jughead is the show’s narrator and school reporter who almost acts like its ‘Gossip Girl’ — documenting the characters’ lives and filling in the blanks for us.
