Community Star Joel McHale Reveals his Nasty Brawls with Co-Star Chevy Chase

Summary

  • Chevy Chase’s horrible attitude caused much distress in the set of Community and many cast members got into brawls with him.
  • Chase’s absence in the cast of the upcoming Community film is being welcomed by the cast.

Community star Joel McHale has recently opened up about his on-set brawls with co-star Chevy Chase.

Community is one of the most popular sitcoms of this generation and has been renewed for six seasons after numerous production hiccups and cancelations.

Despite several problems, the franchise is inching closer to getting a movie, and almost all the seasoned stars are rumored to return. However, Chevy Chase will not be returning for the coveted film. The actor’s rise to fame and eventual downfall happened within the same show and has been extensively discussed by his co-stars.

Joel McHale, who plays Jeff Winger in the series, has opened up about the behind-the-scenes issues in Community in the podcast called ‘Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum.’

Community - "Beyond the Darkest Timeline"

Rosenbaum initiated the conversation by mentioning a tense exchange between McHale and Chase during a photo-op, which opened the floodgates for McHale.

Read what he said below:

There’s a chapter in the book I wrote about fighting him, how to fight him… [We fought] multiple times. There was pushing and shoving… It was advanced horseplay. You know horseplay… It wasn’t fun.

It would get a little contentious. It would get to this point where I’m like… Well. I got in trouble one time because I injured him. Yeah, I dislocated his shoulder.

He just did Marc Maron’s podcast, and it made all these headlines because he was like, “I didn’t find the show funny and didn’t want to be there,” and then my response is, “Yeah, feeling’s mutual about your attitude, and you didn’t have to be there.”

From the beginning, Chase made it clear that he didn’t like being a part of the series, often saying that the role was beneath his standards.

At a point, Chase even humiliated co-star Donald Glover and called him racial slurs, which was referenced by the actor at the WGA awards in 2023.

Glover would go on to leave the show and has since found fame in rap and writing, and he furthered his acting career.

Before this, Chase and Harmon also had a fierce confrontation after an awkward wrap party where Harmon prompted the audience to shout “F*** Chevy,” and they obliged.

Chase responded with a furious voicemail to Harmon, which went viral. This led to the showrunner losing his job for the next season. Although Chase remained, the Vacation star departed after season 4 ended.

The actor’s final appearance was a hologram at the beginning of season 5, and the viewers never saw him afterward.

Showrunner Dan Harmon has maintained that Chase will not return for the Community film. His character, Pierce, was killed off during season 5, and fans are not expecting a possible comeback.

More importantly, given the reactions and rumors, it seems like the consensus would be to keep Chase as far away from the sets as possible!

Got the rare talent to binge an entire show in a single sitting just like that. Although a sucker for psychological thrillers, no bias for any genre when it comes to a good story. A living proof that Netflix and chill is not a myth!
