After nearly three decades, the clerks’ stories are still on a roll. The Clerks creator Kevin Smith announced that he’s coming back with Clerks 3, all set to release in 2022, via Twitter.
Clerks was first released in 1994 in a black-and-white format and revolved around the lives of Quick Stop clerks, which grossed more than $3 million in theaters.
The buddy comedy skyrocketed Smith’s popularity and became a landmark in the indie filmmaking scene. He followed up the movie with a sequel in 2006, and ardent fans have been waiting for more since then.
After the movie’s release, it connected with many young adults and adults working at VHS stores. It then quickly became a favorite, representing an entire generation. Like the hardcore Clerks fans, the movie’s characters have also grown up with time.
Smith revealed in an interview in 2019 that Clerks 3 will follow Randal’s journey after a heart attack to make an independent at Quick Stop with Dante. In addition, it will also show the viewers their favorite duo Jay and Silent Bob, now working at RST.
In an Instagram post, Smith described Clerks 3 as:
It’ll be a movie that concludes a saga. It’ll be a movie about how you’re never too old to completely change your life. It’ll be a movie about how a decades-spanning friendship finally confronts the future.

Clerks 3 has been in development since 2012, the first time Smith mentioned he would like to work on the sequel.
Many legalities and other issues delayed the project – from key cast members not being able to work due to legal issues to finances, leading Smith to even ask for crowdfunding the project.
The most significant delay was in 2018 when Smith suffered a heart attack.
The same incident then made him more committed to continuing to create Clerks 3. Particular stories from his real-life are reflected in the Clerks movies, making the series all the more wholesome.
For the Clerks fans, the news has taken them on a nostalgic ride as they reminisce the times they first saw the movie – asking a friend to record it on a VHS tape, making them use “I’m not even supposed to be here today” as their high school yearbook quote and more.
Clerks 3 is all set for a 2022 release with the same cast members coming back to reprise their unforgettable roles.
