Call of Duty’s upcoming Black Ops title confirmed to be in development

Summary

  • Industry insiders confirm that the next Call of Duty Black Ops title is being developed.
  • The upcoming Black Ops title will be set during the Gulf War conflict of 1990-91 between Iraq and the USA.
  • The title will feature old Black Ops maps like Grind, WMD, and a round-based zombie mode.

Call of Duty is currently going through a rough patch, with their latest release not getting much traction with the fans but only with the critiques. Besides the insufficient gameplay improvement, the title is heavily criticized for its poor and repetitive narration.

Recent rumors confirm a long-standing story that the next installment in the Call of Duty franchise will be the Black Ops VI set in the Gulf War of 1990-91. While the official name for the title is yet to be confirmed, the next Black Ops title is currently set for development with a 2024 release window in mind.

The Black Ops series is known to portray the more shadowy side of things during the wars in which USA was involved, along with other major global conflicts like the Vietnam War and the Cold War.

This upcoming title will focus on the shadowy side of a rather violent affair in the Middle East – the Gulf War. The Gulf War featured Iraq against a 42-country coalition led by the United States.

This war was also the first to receive such comprehensive media coverage. The notable headline was Operation Desert Storm, which involved the bombing of Iraq that led to the liberation of Kuwait in 1991.

This means that the gameplay of the series will go back in time compared to some of the gadgets and technology of the future that we saw in previous Black Ops titles like Black Ops III.

The insider rumor is that there will be a total return of maps like Grind and WMD. Game file leaks also show that there will be a return of the round-based zombie modes with the code name for the title being “Cerebrus.”

The developers of this title, Treyarch, have been at it for quite a while. Hopefully, fans will not have complaints of hurried development as they did with the recent release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III.

As and when it releases, Black Ops VI will be the first Call of Duty title after Microsoft acquired Activision Blizzard. It will be interesting to see how Microsoft manages and markets the huge Call of Duty IP now at their disposal.
