Episode 8 Recap
This episode starts with the first exam at the Tokyo University of the Arts. With the motif given to the examinees, Yatora evaluates the atmosphere and the assignment given for the exam. Trying to come up with the idea of his self-portrait, he starts brainstorming.
As Yatora scribbles his ideas, an examinee in front of him accidentally knocks down his board and mirror. The mirror breaks and Yatora panics about its impact on his passing results. Looking at the shattered mirror, he gets inspired to make his idea better.
The instructor gives him a spare mirror and is intrigued by his work, given the circumstances. Yatora’s idea is about duality and personality, and he tries to make a horizontal version of himself by dividing his face portraying his concept.
Yatora recalls Mrs. Saeki’s advice on shading and gets a good idea. With a few hours set in, the examinees get a break before the last two hours of the exam. During the break, the lady who accidentally knocked his mirror down apologizes and understands it won’t hurt his work.
Realizing everyone is on edge and scared about the exam, Yatora is worried too but determined to give it his all. With the exam done, Yatora meets up with Hashida and Yotasuke. Yotaskue mentions how most art students take the exam for the experience.
The next day, getting back to cram school, everyone is seen gloomy from the exam. Mrs. Ooba enters and mentions how they’ll be going on a field trip to have a fresh start out of the blue. She continues to explain the Tokyo University of the Arts evaluation process.
An examinee passes the first exam if one of the judges says, ‘Okay.’ For the second exam, two judges need to say it. The final selection will be based on the dessin, oil painting, and the sketchbook submitted.
The university looks at how a person would draw and express things from the sketchbook and decide based on all works. Later Yatora meets with Mrs. Ooba, and they talk about how the exam went. He then tells her how he’s not sure about the next exam and where to start improving.
For the field trip, the class finds out they’ll be visiting a museum. Yatora looks at everyone going around and understands he needs to take a breather to see things clearer. Later, Mrs. Ooba tells them they were looking at the exhibits as spectators in the first round.
So now, they’ll look from an artist’s perspective in the second round. With the assignment set, the class gets to inspect and draw for their task. As they return to cram school, Mrs. Ooba finds everyone’s art piece is similar except for Okada and Sakuraba.
Yatora understands he’s an average person looking at the artwork as he thought it’d be different. Mrs. Ooba tells them this gives him a chance to discover something new, and there’s no need to focus on being different and mimicking others.
She then mentions the first exam results being published the next day, and those who pass can come for their next assignments as usual. She also says that the results are not where it all stops and should go beyond what they gained.
Yatora and Hashira converse on their way back home, and Yatora talks about how he’s scared about the results but also doesn’t care as there’s still a long way to go. As the results are published, Mrs. Ooba finds three students walk in who have passed – Kuwana, Hashida, and Yatora.
